Hi Diane

Thanks for that, it all helps to fill in the blanks, my father says his mother (Harry's sister) used to regularly visit a woman in Hertford, this may have been Elizabeth, as my father never knew Harry had been married. If you can find any more it would be gratefully appreciated.

Best Regards

Anthony

Ah actually Michael the premises are now in the hands of Hertford Glass, Kwik Fit moved out some time ago and it stood empty for a while with a temporary use as a fireworks shop, I believe there was also a planning application for demolition and replacement with housing but I think that was refused, I do have some pictures of it as Kwik Fit and Hertford Glass.

Hi Ian and Michael

Many thanks for replying, your personal input and photographs are just what I was looking for. If you have any more I (and probably others) would like to see them.

Being in Hertfordshire that coach registration could be UR rather than UP, Hertfordshire being allocated UR, RO and JH, however looking at it again it is probably more likely to be UP or UF?

Hi Di

I have put it on the deciphering board * so we will see what happens, I am doing some research into coach operators in Hertford, Ware and the local area so if anybody has any pictures of Streets, Dyes, Cannons or any other local operators I would be pleased to see them or any pictures from Thurgoods the coachbuilders!

Think I have most of the pictures that are generally out there on Flickr or whatever, but hopefully there are some others out there?

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Streets of Hertford
« on: Monday 09 July 12 06:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

A little help please in working out what is written on the side of the building in the middle of the attached picture

It is of the old Streets Coaches depot on the corner of Baker Street and Ware Road in Hertford and judging by the coach and the fact the Art Deco Addis building isnt there yet looks like it was taken around 1930.

The writing I am after is directly under the J R Street name and above the poster adverts such as 'Betta'. I have an idea of what it says but would appreciate what other people think.

Thanks

Anthony

Almost Right Poppet the one that died in Peterborough in 1887 is a different man, our Samuel John West Smith (or John Smith/Samuel Smith depending on how he felt it seems) died in Hertford in 1905 and it seems he never married Kate Marriot, at least I have never found a marriage certificate or record.
