Thanks for info Liverpool Annie, I have already tried them and it was them that said I needed to go to the record office in London.  Oh well - maybe I will have to try and get there one day.  :-\

Armed Forces / 17th Lancers
« on: Wednesday 29 March 06 17:05 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my great great grandfather who served in the 17th Lancers in the mid 19th century.  We have a photo of him in India - he was a clarinet player.

I am finding it difficult to get hold of any information - the only thing I have found out is that I need to go to London and physically look up the info myself.  This is just not possible for me - does anyone know of any other way of finding out more?

His name was William Shaw-Webberley (or may have just been William Shaw at that time) and he was born in 1838/1939 in Derbyshire.

I am really just looking for confirmation that he served in the regiment and also if he died in service.

Any pointers in the right direction gratefully received.

Derbyshire / Derby Records Office
« on: Tuesday 28 March 06 19:55 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my family and have discovered that they are from the Derbyshire area (Longford and Doveridge specifically).  I am finding it difficult to find all the info I need on the net so wondered if it is possible/worth going to Derby/Ashbourne record office.

Sorry for sounding a bit stupid but can you go to these places to browse records?  Do you have to pay?  Would I be able to see parish records there too?  ???

I live in Worcester so it is a bit of a trek for me so i want to make sure it has the potential to be useful!

I am trying to trace my great grandfather who we believe was in the 17th Lancers in mid 19th Century.  Can anyone tell me where I can find out whether he was or not?  I have contacted the Lancers who say they are unable to help with individual requests.  Are there any online registers?

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Longford Parish birth Lookup Shaw
« on: Friday 24 March 06 21:48 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with a lookup in Longford parish for a birth record for William Shaw born 1838/1839.  He became a parish orphan before 1841 and was listed on 1841 census at age 2 living with a family Webberley.

I would like to know date of birth and parents if poss.

Thanks.

definately Derbyshire (see my other post in Derbyshire lookup requests for full and complicated story).  He was my Great Great Grandfather and has always posed a family mystery as he changed his name halfway through his life and became Webberley.  We now (thanks to the lovely people on rootschat) know that he was an orphan adopted by the Webberleys.  The definates that we have is that he was born in or around Longford as a Shaw around 1838/39.

thanks for help - it definately would have been 1838 or possibly 1839 as he is listed with his adopted family in 1841 and he was 2 then.  He is proving to be a bit elusive.  I think I will take a chance and send for birth cert.  However I suppose it still won't prove he is my William.

if that is the Family Search site, yes.  That is actually where I found him but there are no details other than above.  If it is the right one then he became a parish orphan sometime before he was 2 but I don't know how I can trace that either (I am a novice at family hunting!)
