New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Registration Place Confusion

Minniehaha & Beg Clonrode

Much thanks for what you have posted and the links to the newspaper articles and documents.

Definitely the James Townley I was researching.

The David Smith referred to at the end of the Clutha article is the son of my Third Great Grandfather and brother of my 2nd Great Grandmother.

Yes, the confusion was over the place of death and its registration. The reference was given in a NZ Death Index for a James Townley Jan-Mar 1907 as Popotunoa, Nelson, New Zealand on an Ancestry search.

Again thanks for your assistance.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Registration Place Confusion
« on: Tuesday 15 December 15 05:24 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching a possible family connection Magdalen or Magdaline Reed Smith circa 1870 to 1939 from Otago region. She may have been the daughter of a David Smith who died in Balclutha in 1914. Magdalen was married to a James Townley in 1897 and I have a record of a Magdalen Reed Townley who died in Dunedin in 1939. At the time of her fathers death in 1914 she was a widow. The only record I can find for the death of a James Townley prior to that is for 1907. However, I am confused by the Registration Place which is given as Popotunoa, Nelson, New Zealand. :-\  As far as I can find out there is a Popotunoa just north west of Balclutha and this would make sense in that Magdalen's family emigrated from Scotland to Dunedin around 1862 and farmed in and around Balclutha and Waitepeka which is not too far from Popotunoa. Nelson on the other hand is on the northern (west) shore of South Island very far away from Dunedin and I am unable to find a Popotunoa in that area.
Can anyone help? Thanks. :)

Thank you Cando and Sparrett.

After reading the article I found a photograph of the couple on Ancestry.

Thanks.  :)

Cando and majm,

I take note of your posts and guidance on the subject.  :-[

Since most of my family research is concentrated in Scotland I can get "limited" information from Scottish records website (name, year, location) on living relatives - so guess we're a bit spoiled.
If that is the rules for Australia then so be it.  :-X

Thanks for your posts.

Update on my last post in this thread.

Obtained marriage certificate for Anita Thomas. It shows that she married in 1937 at age 21 - so birth year circa 1915/16/17 - birthplace Tasmania.

Parents names given as Charles THOMAS (miner) and Florence HUTCHINSON.

Still unable to find any "concrete" birth record for Anita THOMAS or for her parents.

Any help or leads appreciated.

To be honest I have no idea if any of these persons are no longer living.

Not included in the list are another sister and brother who are deceased (mid 90's and early 2000's respectively).

Australia / Colac-Otway Births

Hi,

I am looking for BDM information for the following persons, all born in Victoria and possibly in the Colac-Otway region;

***

Parents were William BELL and Anita THOMAS - I have their marriage (Broadford) and death details (Geelong) - but no birth details for Anita who was apparently born in Tasmania (William was born in Scotland).

All of the above married and had families. Some may have relocated with family to Queensland.

Any information or research leads appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello Bassa,

I haven't been on Roots Chat for ages and just found your post.

Very interesting. My David Smith from Logie, Fife, emigrated to NZ with his bride Ann Henderson. Your Richard Henderson Smith may well be one of their children. Ann Henderson was born in Ceres, Fife, Scotland, and she had a brother Richard Henderson. The only other child of David and Ann that I have details of is Ellen Turbain Smith who moved to, married and died in Palmerston. David and Ann appeared to have incorporated their family surnames into naming of their children. David's mother's surname was Turbain.
The only Richard Henderson Smith I have found appeared to return to Scotland and married in Aberdeen. So do you think it's the same person?
Rgds.

Many thanks for your posts.

Remarriage of Joseph Sewell and Ann Creaney this appears to match the details I found on FamilySearch today.

Re marriage of WJ Bell and Margaret Fitzsimmons I have detail of a record from FamilySearch website which shows a William John Bell marriage in Lurgan, Civil Registration, in 1877.

Can you advise from where your information has been collected? Also which websites would you recommend for searches on Ireland genealogy, and if they are free or payable.

Thank you.

Rgds, plays54
