Thanks, Sue. I thought that might be the best approach for the inquiries about the different family.

I have now received the NORKAITIS immigration file from the National Archives of Australia and I am happy to report it confirms all the material offered by Rootschatters. Thanks again,

Geoff

I believe Roman is still alive so Rootschat rules preclude us talking about him. But I did note in my question that I knew Marianne was at Dernau on 14 Dec 1945. It has been suggested to me that the religion GC stands for Global Charismatic, an evangelical church. But I have no proof of that.

I am interested to find a place and date for the marriage of this couple, if someone has access to European records. It seems Piotr (1920-1997) and Marianne (nee Groß, 1926-2022) met in Germany at the end of the war as displaced persons and travelled to Naples, where they caught the SS Victory to Australia, departing on 4 Aug 1949 and arriving on 5 Oct 1949. I know Marianne was at Dernau, Ahrweiler, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on 14 Dec 1945.
Thanks, Geoff

Petras and Juze, who arrived in Chicago with a girl named Danute in 1949, would have been of the same generation as Gediminas's father-- born at the end of the 1800s. Gediminas was born in 1926. Perhaps his brother Petras was the nephew of the Petras mentioned as dying in 1989. In which case we are still searching for Gediminas's father's name. It is unclear how Danute fits in -- Petras and Juze were 40 and 38 when she was born -- but that is not really important.

TreeSpirit, would you also have access to Lithuanian baptisms? I believe Gediminas Norkaitis was born in Gudelail, Lithuania, on 15 Feb 1926. I met his father in Lithuania in 1983, when his father was 88yo.  Would you know the names of Gediminas' parents?

That's excellent, thank you. It matches everything I have. The later documentation gives her religion as Lutheran, which I guess is the equivalent. I was beginning to despair of getting her maiden name, but to get her parents as well is a real bonus. Thanks to all who have helped. Geoff

That’s interesting. Diana and I met the Chicago branch of the Norkaitis family in 1984. They lived in a small area of the south of the city, clustered around the Lithuanian churches, delis etc. And they all had holiday homes together on the other side of Lake Michigan. It was a real little community.
