Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Thomas Sykes, Leeds - Look Up Please
« on: Friday 08 September 06 09:22 BST (UK)  »
As I am resident in Portugal I cannot easily do Look Ups.

I would like to confirm through the Electoral Register who was resident at 12 Nippet Mount Leeds, (Burmontofts Ward District AD),in 1935/6/7.  This should show my Father Thomas and hopefully his family, which I believe to be William and Annie (my potential Grandparents).

Can anyone help please?

Many thanks

Steve

Many thanks everyone.

I have looked at the William Sykes family which Nessie identified.  They originate in Yeadon High Street where in 1861 William is living with his mother and grandparents.  In 1871 he is with his mother Ruth and step-father.

He marries and moves to Holbeck.  In 1891 his widowed (again) mother is back with him.

In 1901 he is living in Commercial Row Holbeck with his wife and 10 children including two sons called Denison and Harvey - wouldn't they be nice to follow!

He has a son William b.c.1877 who in 1901 is a clerk/book-keeper which could be my grandfather.  If so he changes jobs such that by my fathers marriage he is a railwayman.

Will have to wait and see, and hope Leeds RO come up trumps.

Thank you Nessie.  Do I need to do so in person?

I am pretty sure the death in Q4 1966 is my father.  His age is shown as 56, so a dob of 1910.  There is a Thomas (no J) dob Q4 1910 in Leeds, but at this time the mothers maiden name wasn't shown.  The record just shows Vol. and Page so I am not quite sure how I can go from here.  It wouldn't be beyond my Old Feller to make himself a couple of years younger.

For the record, I live in Portugal, so cannot nip down the local libarary of an afternoon!  Well I can, but everything is in Portuguese.

Will the Leeds reg Office do a search based on the little info I have for a Birth Cert.?

Hi Guys

William was a Railwayman.  Thomas J. died 1965/66, but I cannot find the record.  It's at times like this that you wish you didn't bin every piece of paper when you clear out the house after your parents had died!  Oh well.  family lore has it the the Sykes's originated in Ireland, but I'm not so sure.  Sykes is a very old and common Yorkshire name.

Thanks for everyones help.  I have my mothers line back to the 1700s, but don't even know my Fathers dob - it's very frustrating.

Thanks Tanja

He married 27 Mar 1937 and the cert. shows him as age 25.  I have looked at 1911 Births and drawn a blank, but thanks for the link.  My elder brother says he had a sister, Marie but that's all he knows - hopeless!

Thomas is my father, born 1912, I believe in Leeds.  His father is William Sykes.  Thomas marries my Mother Doris Kirlew in 1937 and at that time he is living at Nippet Mount, Burmontofts Leeds.

I have a great deal of information on the Kirlew line but virtually nothing on my fathers side.  Yorkshire BDM searches have drawn a blank as have census searches for William.

Can anyone help please?

UPDATE - Robert Johnson

Many thanks for everyones help.  I now have Robert b.c.1779 Berwick and his wife Ann b.c. 1799 Berwick and thanks to everyones help have confirmed the link to my family.  Does anyone have the facility to trace Roberts parents?  He is variously Johnston with a "T" and also shown on some of the Census records as (incorrectly) born Berwickshire Scotland.

Thanks again

Catherine
