Hi, I've just discovered that a relative of mine was admitted to the above in 1900 aged 8 and died there ten years  later. I'm trying to find any archives. Does anyone have any ideawhere I could look?

I realise this question was posted a very long time ago and that you have probably found the information you wnated but in case you haven't, Thomas Patterson Coburn Louthin was my 3xgt grandfather and I have a fairly clear picture of most of his life and those of his family. Let me know if you want to connect on this

I don't think so. There are large numbers of private baptisms going back to the early 1730s, though no period quite so concentrated as this, so I can't see it being connected.

Thank you. When I get time, I'll have a look and see exactly for how long this was happening and what proportion of baptisms were private. I definitely goes back to the early 1730s though, so a good 10 years and more. I'll also check to see if it's the same vicar.

Looking further into it, it was a much longer period than that, though not all baptisms were private outside that time.

In Whitwell, Derbyshire between 26th December 1745 and 19th April 1746, all baptisms (11 of them) were private. Most of the children were received into the church between three days and two months after their baptisms. I wonder what was going on?
