I read a lot of the responses as Tfo including the question about marriage and children.

I saw Mr Goballs too.  :)

I have page three of the document now also - thank you.

Embodied and disembodied are new terms to me. I have just been reading about their meaning at https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/106981-discharged-or-disembodied/ but different people seem to have different ideas on this.

Thank you Shaun. i could make out the 'ham' but not the 'Clouts'. And thank you for looking at the employer information too.

Ah, so 'by purchase' means he bout himself out.

I am unable to see the September 1902 note about South Africa.

Carole

You are right.  The Jeremiah Maloney I have found late yesterday was born in Leicester, not Northampton, so I think I am now looking at the possibility that Jeremiah and James are the same person.

1901
James Maloney, aged 29, a shoe finisher, boarding at Finedon Street, Burton Latimer, Kettering (although recorded as a widower and born in Grafton Underwood)
Archive reference: RG13
Piece number: 1446
Folio:   81
Page:   39

1911
James Maloney, aged 40, a boot and shoe finisher, boarding at Spencer St Burton Latimer N Kettering, Burton Latimer Northamptonshire, England (recorded as a widower)
Census reference: RG14PN8562 RG78PN443 RD167 SD1 ED4 SN380
RG78 code number: 443
Piece number: 8562

Obviously, I still have the photo of Jeremiah I have been given by my relative. I have been advised that the badge on his turban is that of the Northamptonshire Regiment.  This fits with the army service record details from 1902, between the above two census returns, that I have found for Jeremiah Maloney, service number 6568.

I have taken another look at this, to see if anything fits with the two census returns above.  I am unable to read the address of residence or the employer name but the age and town of residence are a good fit.  The form seems to indicate this man has served in the military before but I don't understand what Reg by purchase means.

Will keep thinking on this.

And re the death of Jeremiah Maloney, the following information has been shared with me by Julie on Ancestry.

The Market Harbourer Advertiser of 19 December 1922 mentions a Jeremiah Maloney of Burton Latimer being drunk in Market Harborough on 28 November.

The Nottingham Journal of 9 Jan 1928 carries the attached report of his death.

I have attached the report of Jeremiah's death here.

Hello Carole

Thank you for all the information above. I only said to my dad this morning that I wanted to go over the information again as the information about Middlesex and Norah did not seem right.  See foot of message.

Re 1901 and 1911, I have located a Jeremiah MALONEY as being a patient and an elastic weaver on the West Humberstone Municipal Ward, aged 29 born 1872. This could explain why he is not living with Ellen and his children?  It seems to be some sort of institution but I can't gather more than that. I am still drawing a blank with 1911 though. Wondering if he wasn't in the UK at this time?

Information about elastic web manufacture in Leicester can be found at https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/leics/vol4/pp326-327.

Thank you once again, it is good to have someone to bounce thoughts and ideas off of.

Thank you Shaun. I am trying to get further information about the photo from the relative who sent it to me. It looks as if it was taken in a studio, so if the photo was in a mount, that might have information on that. Or it may have been taken and sent as a postcard, so I have asked if there is a stamp, postmark or date. Jeremiah was I believe born in Northamptonshire and the badge on the turban is I believe from the Northamptonshire Regiment.  I understand that the Regimental Collection is held at Abington Park Museum, so I have asked them for help too. I will post back here, if I learn anything interesting.

Hello

I am trying to learn more about the photo attached.

I believe the photo shows Jeremiah Maloney, the step son of my great great great grandmother, Ann (nee Cox) who was married to my great great great grandfather Joseph Abram but who married William Maloney after Joseph's death.

I believe Jeremiah was born in 1872 but was married, living in Leicester aged 19 in 1891, boarding with William and Sarah Abrams and their children.

In 1901, a Jeremiah Maloney, living with Nora Maloney and her daughter is recorded in Middlesex, working as a porter. Jeremiah is recorded as Norah's son and he is now recorded as single.

A search of army records has located a Jeremiah Maloney, born 1871 (aged 31) in Northampton.  His service number is 6568, regiment is shown as the Northamptonshire regiment, attestation date 12 March 1902, attestation corps is 3rd Northamptonshire and the series reference is WO 06 - Militia Service Records 1806 - 1915.

Not sure where I go from here to learn more but if you are able to help. please let me know.
