The Common Room / Re: Date - day calculator
« on: Sunday 05 January 20 21:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, it has been some time since I have been on here, my lifestyle is in the way  :o

The date in question could be a Wednesday, or it could be a Monday....
See
https://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/julian-gregorian-switch.html
and
https://calendarhome.com/calculate/day-of-week
Just apply the country your ancestor was in on the required date and you have it.
And as for using Excel or similar programmes, see the Excel Forum
https://www.excelforum.com/excel-general/1090731-calculating-dates-that-are-before-the-year-1900-a.html

And if you want to exercise your brain and work it out for yourself, for the Gregorian calendar

Giving wednesday :-*
With the Julian formula further down the page.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: The Times wants your views: DNA ethnicity results

Thanks, trystan, but no thanks  :) I looked at it once a few years ago and came to the conclusion that the testing would not give me any information that is interesting to me

Technical Help / Re: Windows 10 - The Eagle has landed!
« on: Tuesday 18 August 15 19:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I have just updated my Aspire E 15 laptop bought last Christmas with 8.1 to Windows 10 and I haven't seen any problems yet. I did have a little worry when the screen started jumping about but then I saw it was running a few last tweeks. I also had to turn off and on again for everything to (appear to) work properly. And my favourites were found without any problem.

I'm off to England on Thursday for my great-niece's wedding so I shall learn the new system slowly.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who posted on this thread, helping me to decide to take the plunge now instead of waiting a while for teething problems to be ironed out.

cheers, falcybe

Hello Arcneaux,

For storage, Legacy is perfect and it is very user-friendly for organizing your family and for making direct searches for any individual. The basic programme is free but you have to pay a reasonable sum to have their very good charts.

I have seen other posts in RC concerning professional printing of trees. You should make a search :-)

Technical Help / Re: windows XP laptop. Can I move to Vista ?

Personally I would try and buy media for Windows 7 to install on your newly acquired Acer machine. It is far better than Vista.

It is not so much that Windows 7 is better, I loved Vista before moving on to 7 and now 8.1 but Vista requires at least 4gb of RAM to work without you pulling your hair out waiting for something to happen.

If your Acer gift appears slow compared with your machine working on XP then there is a very good reason - it isn't as fast as your computer - so don't put vista on it without a lot of thought, Vista uses lots and lots of memory.

Do you want to use the gifted XP machine out of respect for your friend who has just died or has your own computer under W7 developed problems?

Hello rosiejayne,

If you are the slightest worried then you could keep a copy of an older version the time you make one back-up and then delete it the second time you make a back-up of the same information. That way you always keep two levels of security.

Downside, I don't understand why we would want to keep back-ups of Windows system files, surely Windows does that anyway? Yes, I keep my Windows programme files, or with my latest computer, the general back-up should I wish to restore but I don't keep backing up on a daily or weekly basis

At the risk of overselling, I think, except for the very, very casual user, the manual backup route is a dead end that will end in a mess.

Absolutely but I think that most RootsChatters with their tree on their computer and a dozen or thirty folders containing the underlying information, certificates, censii, photos etc, and with e-mail on google, gmail, yahoo, live, etc, are what is known as casual users so it would be best for them (us  :) ) to keep it simple.

When I copy files from one folder to another or even one disc to another and I have a file in the destination of the same name then my 'puter asks if I want to replace "older with newer"/"newer with older"/"bigger with smaller" or make a copy then I go with the flow and take the safest path. Afterwards I check the results to avoid having too many copies which are not needed.
