You have the likes of

Patterson , William , Glenleary   http://donegalgenealogy.com/aughnishgv.htm  ...but is it correct William??

The key word to find on a Marriage would be the Townland.

Some people named houses, farms etc after where they came from!

William the son named his home in Victoria 'Ramelton' and his dc says he was born in Milford.

Hi,

All my migrant ancestors settled in NSW, most arrived directly to NSW.  Two arrived in the early 1850s, aged 11 and 14 or thereabouts.  Unaccompanied.  Unable to read and write.  - Gold fever.  Those two (brothers) arrived Melbourne, and rushed off to the Goldfields.  They married in Victoria and their Vic m.c.s include the name of the village where they were born and grew up, plus the names of both their parents including mum's nee name.  Yes the person who wrote it on the m.c. was the clergyman, and yes he had trouble spelling, but the name of the village and the county (population in 1840s in England - about 17 inter-related families), and mum's nee name 'clinched' the official record with the known family Bible and the known Birthday Book passed down through the family.

What a story. Brave and desperate. Can't imagine my 12 year old grandson doing that.  No info like that on any certificates I have. I do not have the marriage certificates, only death. William 's death certificate did say Milford, Ireland . The others just Ireland. Will download marriage certificates. Thanks for your help.

Hi there,

Do you have the marriage certs for each of those four?  If so, then that is first hand information they have provided when marrying, and likely would be considered more reliable than the information on any death registration.

Also, I am a tad confused,  your opening post says that the parents are William and Nancy McNUTT, but your topic heading has PATTERSON as the family name.

I can see a Matthew PATTERSON's death registration INDEXED at VIC BDM for 1924.  It is ref # 16548.   The index displays his father as William Patterson, and no given name for mum, but her maiden name as McKNUTT.   Vic BDMs are usually very informative, and provide details of marriage/s, children of the marriage, length of time in the colony/state, occupation, parents etc etc.

When and where did the other three die?   Can you please check on those d.c.s re the responses to the question 'how long in the colonies' to help confirm the 1854 arrival info...

JM

JM, I am sure the 1854 arrival was correct,

Four members of my husbands Patterson family from the ramelton area in Donegal emigrated to Victoria, Australia in the 1850s. Their names were Robert (20), Ann (18), Matthew (10) and William (8). The big gap in age means there were probably other children who did not come with them. Parents were William and Nancy McNutt . All four children had the same mother but cannot trace them.  Can anyone help with info.
Cheers Christine

I have their death certificates. All say mother was Nancy McNutt. The daughter was named Ann but always called Nancy

What records do you have that show who their Mother was?

On a relook, I noticed that 2 of the death certificates had McKnutt not Mcnutt. Don't know why . There are often spelling mistakes and not everyone could read or write. Those filling out dc. Had a guess. (The joys of research )  I will look with alternate spelling on Irish links helpfully provided earlier.

That thread started over eight years ago  :) Perhaps there's clues there to help with this current thread.

Welcome to RChat Christine  :)

Spotted that. Just hopeful. Two of the boys married James sisters in Australia. According to a Donegal newspaper notice, their father seemed to be living in Longhill near Ramelton at the time of the marriage.

There was more than 1 Ann(Nancy) McNutt around.......

Yes I had a look in civil records but they do not seem to mention a spouse name on the death record which would be the only record availAble for time change
I am new to this site so I could be wrong. Thanks for the help

Did Nancy come back to Donegal - she is the Complainant - did she take William to court in his abscence ?
or is it a different Nancy McNutt ??
its the only record I can find for a Nancy McNutt

Name    Nancy Mcnutt
Event Type    Court
Event Date    30 Apr 1868
Event Place    Donegal, Ireland
County    Donegal
Role of Individual    Complainant
Court    Milford
Milford to Ramelton is 4 miles .....so at least a relative if not THE Nancy McNutt

Never seen this before. The youngest, William was born in Milford according to his death certificate.
Not aware that parents William and Nancy left at all. Wonder why she took William to court ?
I have never been able to find any info on them. William the father was a farmer.
