Moray House is now part of the University of Edinburgh. They might have some old records.

Early in the 20th century, my mother also attended Moray House but it was a school then.

Hi Archie:
I was "home" on vacation a month ago and drove from my boyhood house down Portobello High Street, through Joppa and Musselburgh and on to North Berwick.  Portobello High Street is a bit run down all right (and a bit garish in places) but it still brought back many fond memories.

Hi June: You seem to have 2 accounts going: "June Locke"  and "JuneLocke' In any event, the first one shows enough posts to qualify for Personal Messaging. (PM) I suggest you and Stuart exchange email addresses though PM, and then you can scan the pictures and email them to him.

Vayla: You could try visiting Christine Stokes's site which has been moved to:
http://cosuthfamhistory.blogspot.ca/2016/03/blog-post.html
There is a link on it that leads to Burial Sites, including Skerry.
Of course you are exploring "Mackay Country" where there are hosts of Mackays with identical names, but you might be lucky and be able to identify your ancestors. There is also a list of the last people to inhabit the island - all Mackays.

Hi Julie-Ann: I have looked through my files and, although there is a similarity of names, I do not think we are from the same family, except perhaps several generations further back.  The use of traditional Scottish naming pattern can be a help or a hindrance, the latter because of cousins having identical first and last names , compounded by the absence of the mother's name in some earlier Parish registrations. Alexander, William & Robert were names frequently given to Woodburns, while Agnes & Janet were often given to Mitchells. I am sorry I could not be of help.
However, there is one piece of family lore you find interesting and may connect with, and that is our supposed relation to George Woodburn the Covenantor/martyr? Who at one time was a tenant of Loudon Mains (farm).
Good luck,
Ian

Ayrshire / Re: Surname Interests from Fenwick & Loundoun Ayrshire any connections?
« on: Saturday 15 April 17 16:47 BST (UK)  »
My paternal grandmother was Elizabeth Woodburn (1869 - 1940), the daughter of Alexander Woodburn (1836 - 1904) and Catherine Kenna (dates uncertain).Going back from there:William Woodburn ((1811 - 1873) & Margaret Templeton (1811 - 1880); Alexander Woodburn (b. 1782) & Margaret Perrie/Pirrie (b.1781): Willam Woodburn (b.1757) & Janet Mitchell (b.1760) ; William Woodburn (b.1733) & Agnes Mitchell (b.1734); William Woodburn (b.?) & Isabel Hamilton (b.?).

Sadly, my hard drive (not backed up) got fried a couple of years ago so I have lost my electronic data, but I do have quite a lot of hard copies of file if you are interested in this family.

PS Probably more accurate to read  "b. " as Baptised

Bert: There are 4 in Kilmarnock but Loudon and Riccarton are also possibilities. I have a book of pre-1855 MIs for Kilmarnock & District. If you advise the name(s) you are interested in, I will gladly take a look.

Hi Munro; I assume your query relates to your subsequent thread concerning Christian Names. Like djct, my 'default" assumption is that Saingo refers to Sangomor; but, in the absence of any substantiation, it can only be an assumption and I wouldn't rely upon it to try to prove something.
BTW, I cannot offer any useful suggestions regarding your "Christian Name' mystery.

Meggy:  If you  "Google" 18 Harrison Gardens Edinburgh, you will probably get a map and a Street View, which will give you an idea of what these houses/tenements look like.

Beautiful park across the road, with tennis courts, and a short walk to the canal (strong attraction for a boy)
