Australia / Re: Dorothy McCulloch born 1904 Wakefield emigrated to Australia 1904

Wow it is great to talk to someone who could throw any light whatsoever on my  Dads side of the family. My dad was the cousin of Dorothy McCulloch who married William Kemp.  My Grandad (George Chalmers McCulloch) was James Jack's brother, he also died in the war in 1916 just before James Jack.

All I have for William Kemp it that his parents were probably William Albe Kemp & Emily Boyd and the information received from the very helpful people at Roots (I am sure you can access these via the texts in my communications with them)

I have an old photo of Dorothy McCulloch with her brother and her parents, and, also the marriage certificate of James Jack McCulloch & Teresa Rutter. If your brother in law is interested and would like to contact me, I can let him have these. Let me know and I will give you my details.  I have tried to attach them to this reply but it is saying the file is too big.

If I can help you in any way with Dorothy's parents side of the family please let me know and I will do all I can to help.

Thank you again for your help on this.

Best Regards

Hi MonicaL
Thank you so much for that information.

I have managed to find the census for 1901 for Elizabeth you found, her age is only shown as 22 which had me confused as I had her down as being 24 in 1901, I previously had another census for Kelvin which must have been wrong.

While digging in further into her death I have found  a death notice for an Elizabeth McCulloch died 12/02/1920 in the Sanatorium in Kensington Johannesburg (again this may be a red herring but seems to make sense so  I would like your opinion) I found it on FamilySearch South Africa, Transvaal, ... Supreme Court, 1869-1958 records  the age of this Elizabeth was 43 which ties in with my Elizabeth and states she was born in Scotland.  However it has her down as Married but does not give a husbands name or any other information.

It is sad about Thomas and his family, especially when the rest of the family seem to be OK

RE James Ambrose Brown Snr I need to investigate to see if I can find anymore information on his daughter !Elizabeth Murial Cunningham Brown" born 1926 it may be that she died in south Africa also.

Hi Monica & Forfarian

That information is fantastic and so interesting to read. I am please to have found a picture of his headstone on the information you sent. I may put it on Find A Grave so others may find it in future.

Monica,  the Studio mentioned in the poor house records 1906 could have been a Photographers studio, as sister Janet had her occupation shown as Photographic artist on her marriage certificate.

After looking further into it, David's nephew, James Ambrose Brown, was a famous author (born 1919 however I cannot find Date of his death). I am still trying to find more information on James Ambrose Brown Snr (David's brother and James's father). I know he was born in 1891 but cannot find either his or his wife's (Elizabeth Muriel McNaughtan born 1896) date of deaths.

The only other death I am missing is for his sister Eliza (or Elizabeth (as per 1881 census).  I know she was born in 1877 and can trace her as far as 1916 when she was named next of kin on her brother's army records.  Her name was shown as Bessie.

Any help you can give me on death dates would be fantastic.

Thank you both for your help.

Can anyone give me information on David McCulloch Brown born 1880 died I think 1947 (not sure where) .  See extract from a Falkirk Newspaper.  Also any information on his siblings would be appreciated.

Aileen Brown, from Denny, contacted The Falkirk Herald to give details about her husband Stuart’s family connection Dr Kaunda – one of Africa’s founding father and the president of Zambia from 1964 to 1991 – who died at the age of 97 last month.

Stuart’s grandfather, David McCulloch Brown, who died in 1947, was a Church Of Scotland missionary who spent over 20 years in Africa, in Lubwa, Zambia, where he would develop a close friendship with the famous Dr Kaunda’s family.

Born in John Street, Falkirk, Mr Brown moved to Lanarkshire when he was an infant.

He started his working life as a bricklayer in Motherwell, then went to Canada and funded himself through university, graduating as a medical doctor in 1910.

Mr Brown returned to Scotland and became a minister and was a R.A.M.C. captain in the First World War, serving in Italy.

He went to Africa in 1921 as a missionary doctor and spent the rest of his life there.

While in the country, Mr Brown used his construction skills to supervise, and take part in, the building of schools, hospitals and churches.

I do not need any info on his grandson as he is still living

Wow that is fantastic, I was going to start looking into this and you have saved me a job.

I will now add the American David to my tree with all his Family.

Thank you again very much for doing that for me.

Thank you so much for looking into this for me.

I did think it was my David at first because of his children's names , but as you say, possibly the people on Ancestry may have been guessing!!!

That is why I would have liked corroboration documentation before I jumped to any conclusion.  My Mum always said 2 wrongs don't make a right, so until I can find anything which ties him to Thomas & Elizabeth Gray, I think I should refrain from updating my tree.

I could go down the route of investigating the son of WILLIAM MCCULLOCH/JEAN PATON and then perhaps I can discard them.

Hi Monica

On Ancestry the mother of that David McCulloch (Find A Grave ref 70788811 , wife's are Jane Alison & Eliza Ege), is shown as "Jane Paton".  I can see on Scotlandspeople 607/ 30 28  there was a David McCulloch born in 1822 in Muirkirk who's parents were WILLIAM MCCULLOCH/JEAN PATON FR664 (FR664).

So I am inclined to believe that this is not the son of Thomas McCulloch and Elizabeth Gray.

Hope this helps, et me know if you need anything else.
