Family History Beginners Board / Re: Badley vs Bradley (Surname)
« on: Saturday 06 July 19 23:58 BST (UK)  »
The 1637? Bradley immigrant in New Haven William Bradley (1619-1691) always used Bradley whereas it appears his father Danyell/Daniel, who remained in Yorkshire, was usually known/written as Broadley (as was his predecessors). New country, new spelling. After Daniel died, his widow Elizabeth Sheaffe Broadley brought William's half-siblings Ellen, Joshua, Daniel, Nathan & Stephen to New Haven, where she apparently then assumed her stepson's surname of Bradley. New country, new spelling.

Family History Beginners Board / Badley vs Bradley (Surname)
« on: Friday 05 July 19 21:34 BST (UK)  »
Some of my direct male Bradley ancestors on the Eastern Shore of Maryland (over five generations: Richard -> William -> Thomas -> James W -> Thomas D) – for reasons still not known to me – decided (c 1700) to change their surname from Bradley to Badley, and then (c 1865) back to Bradley again. Does anyone have any idea why they did this? Richard Badley (1661-1749) was the son of Henry Bradley (1629-1679), the son of Henry Bradley (1600?-1650) who emigrated from England to VA in 1635/36.
