Sussex / Re: Queen Victoria in Brighton.......

Thanks to everyone for those clues! I'm sorry I was absent the discussion for a time while dealing with travel and then illness.  I did read through the links that were sent in the first reply....very interesting history.  It sounds like my ancestor could perhaps have taken care of "the Queen's horses." But I'll probably never know for sure!

Sussex / Queen Victoria in Brighton.......
« on: Thursday 09 January 20 21:51 GMT (UK)  »
I know from other reading that Queen Victoria had holidays in the Brighton area.  My mother told me that family legend says that my 3rd great-grandfather, William Stredwick, "took care of the Queen's horses." I know he lived & died in the Brighton area (1795-1866.) I wonder if the Queen kept horses in Brighton or had a stable there?  I know it may only be legend but often legends have a kernel of truth, which I'd love to uncover!  Are there any historical resources or records that tell about Queen Victoria's activities in Brighton that might give me clues?

Thank you for your offer.  But I believe my Stredwick ancestors are buried in the cemetery at the Old St Andrews Church.

Which Hove cemetery?  I'm interested in Stredwick/Streadwick family graves. Thank-you!

solidrock, Thank you! That may very well be the family I'm searching for.  Is there any further information about descendants of the siblings?  Or any tips on how I would I go about looking for those families?

Sussex Lookup Requests / Sarah Bates Stredwick
« on: Saturday 21 September 19 00:00 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for any descendants who are related to Sarah Bates who was born abt 1844/1845 in Sussex, and married George Stredwick in Hove in Dec. 1866.  Sarah and George were my great great grandparents. They left for America shortly after their wedding, arriving in America Feb 1867.  I have some information that Sarah's father was named Edward Bates but I do not have confirmation of that, and I have no names for any of her other family.  My mother inherited a lovely photo album that we believe Sarah brought with her when she came to the USA.  The photo album was in possession of Sarah's daughter (my great grandmother) and then passed on to my grandmother.  My grandmother could not identify any of the photos because she did not know the album existed until after the death of both her mother and grandmother.  I have photographed the entire album and I would love to find any relatives in the Brighton, England area who may also have antique family photos that we could compare and perhaps ID some of the people in Sarah's photo album.  If someone will explain how to do it  ???, I will post a few photos for reference.
