Thank you for your reply, yes I am aware of the more recent history but am currently researching further back with my tree and am looking at information from the early 1900's backwards and both of my great grandmothers lines!

Thanks very much! I've managed to find out quite a bit about one of them (J Barber) through the various census, etc., and now have his full name James Clement Barber, it seems he remained in the military throughout his life right up till his death in 1912!!

I went to access the WO97 pension records but I can't afford the 6 month membership and the pay per view options are not going to be viable with the amount of soldiers I have to do this for as I am doing this to help out and am not getting paid in any way or form! Very sad it's the only way to access them, would have helped if findmypast did a monthly membership like my ancestry one!

Armed Forces / Crimean War - Kings Royal Hussars - HELP!
« on: Wednesday 09 February 11 20:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I don't know if this is a total long shot, but can anyone help? I've been given two names of soldiers who served with the KRH in the crimean war, I have been asked to try and find out about the history behind them, but they have so very little info for me to work with.

This is what I have:

Pte H Heathcock - 11th Hussars

He was awarded a clasp on the 11th November 1856 for the siege of Sebastopol between 1st Oct 1854 - 9 Sept 1855, he received the medal for the Crimean War (date unknown) along with clasps for the "Battle of Balaclava" and "Alma"

Farrier J Barber

On serving with the 11th Hussars, he was awarded a medal for the Crimean war along with a Clasp on the 20th Sept 1854. He was also awarded a clasp for the siege of Sebastopol between 1st Oct 1854 - 9 Sept 1855.

On the 25th Oct he received a clasp "Battle of Balaclava"

This is all I have and have no idea where to look next, any help or direction would be so very much appreciated.

Many thanks!

Thank you! That's helped me loads - his Mum was unmarried, I've found his birth entry and his baptism and his mother is listed as a single mother!

No idea if the family looking after him are related or not! Will perhaps see if I can figure that out!

Many, many thanks!

Hi!

Can anyone help? I am trying to locate someone for a friend and I enjoy a challenge! I think I may have found him on the 1881 Census, his name is Harry Strickland born approx. 1878 in Ealing, Berkshire, he is listed with two other people called Hiscock and next to his name it says "Nurse Child".

Can anyone shed some light on what this would mean!

Any help would be really appreciated. Many thanks!

Ahhhh!! Is it 1911? I thought it was a few years prior to that!

The name I have is Edith Lloyd, born approx. 1909, Prescot, Lancashire, father Evan Lloyd, mother Kate Lloyd (nee Davies - married 1904) I have found 3 options for Edith but was hoping on the maiden name to eliminate the other 2! I think it could be Edith Doreen Lloyd B: 1909 but can't be sure!

Thanks for your help though!!

Family History Beginners Board / Help searching birth please!
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 14:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am not a beginner to family history but I am having problems using Ancestry.co.uk in the past I've been able to search births and when available the mothers maiden name would also appear, now it seems though I can no longer search births unless I search them on the free bmd; this doesn't give me that info.

I know there use to be another birth searching resource but I can't find it??

Can anyone help? I really would like to find a maiden name for someone.

Many thanks.
