Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1871 Census-Liverpool

Hi Laufi

Sorry about the delay in replying.  I'm assuming that you are a descendant of the Pladdy/Pitblade/Pittpladdy clan.  They seemed to change the name quite frequently early on, but if I can help I will.

Hi,

There was obviously some considerable danger in working at the Drigg R.O.F. as there are at least 2 headstones in the cemetery with the words "who was killed at the Drigg R.O.F. July 25th 1941"

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Where for art thou ..... John Doran???

Hi,

There are 3 John Doran's in 1901, Whitehaven.  2 give W'haven as birthplace and 1 gives England - Sometimes children coming over quite young assumed they were born here, so as these Johns had married (two married Annies, and one married Agnes).  All these give age as 31 yrs.  Just a thought as possibles?

Alyson,

I did go to the cemetery this am - the workman that was there thinks it is a "common grave", which is unlikely to have a headstone.  "6/O" is quite a large area to cover so I'm afraid I left it for today as he was unable to give me a more precise location.  I have kept the details and I'll try again next time I'm there.

Do you know when her husband died? - if it was later he may have a headstone.

Hi Alyson,

Geoff directed me to your request (Thanks Geoff).  I will try and see if there is a headstone there, though I haven't been there since before Christmas.  It might be a few days (depending on weather) but I'll let you know by the weekend.

I hope to be in the RO tomorrow - If you can send a pm of details you have I'll see if I can find anything.  I've already jotted down the burial (George Minnican), but as I'll only manage a couple of hours I can't promise a long time on the "News" as if it was an accident it may have been after inquest etc. so a gap between death & burial.

Cumberland Completed Lookups / Re: MATTHEW MILLS & JANE

Unfortunately I only have the actual burial details which gives where the person died.  If someone was possibly chronically ill and the family couldn't (or wouldn't) look after them then they went in the local workhouse.

Matthew Mills was buried 17th Feb. 1862 aged 54 yrs.  He was in the Union Workhouse, Preston Quarter (Whitehaven) at time of death.  Ref: Jac 746 4/G/183 (Common Grave in Church of England burial ground).

A Jane Mills died at Queen St., Whitehaven and was buried 25th Dec. 1872 but she was 73 yrs old so appears to be a bit old for your Jane.

Hi

There was a William Johnston, aged 74 yrs. Harrowthwaite(sic), buried 4th January 1857 and Ann Johnston, 71 yrs. Harrowthwaite(sic), buried 11th February 1858 in Whitehaven Cemetery.  Both were in common graves and both Church of England.

The ages appear about right and explains why they couldn't be found in 1861.

There is also a James Johnston, 58 yrs. 18 Howgill St., buried 16th April 1874 but he isn't at that address in 1871 though there is a family called Johnston ie. Thomas, 26 yrs and Annie, 28 yrs and Eliza, 1 yr.

There are some people who appear to be missing if they were in hospital (In 1861 all the patients in Whitehaven Infirmary were only recorded by their initials so don't show up by looking for a name).

I don't know how often this happened - obviously confidentiallity taken seriously even then!  I have seen it with boarders as well.
