London and Middlesex / Re: William Monk Baptism - 18th Century

Hello

I am researching a William Monk who died in Whitechapel in 1856. According to his age as shown on the 1841 and 1851 censuses he was born in 1801.

This William Monk was a horse  slaughterer (a ‘knacker’) and some of my ancestors apparently worked for him.

The St Sepulchre birth intrigues me because that is near Smithfield market and prior to 1855 it was a major centre of horse slaughtering.

I know there was a knacker’s yard near the Gibbet Toll Gate. One of my ancestors worked there and lived in Gibbett Lane in the 1850s.

Thanks, Shaun, that looks conclusive.

Thanks for your quick response.

Give those Ripperologists half a chance and they’ll try to fit anyone up. It must be irritating if their target is one of your own ancestors.

Personally I enjoy the research, my own ancestors were in the East End at the time, but the ‘hunt the Ripper’ game is a bit silly.

Regards,

Gary

Hi All,

I am trying to determine if this John Richardson is a relative of mine.

My John was born early 1852 in Lambeth to Thomas and Amelia Richardson.

The family is in Stepney for the 1861 Census and again for the 1871 Census with John the only one missing.  I can't find him anywhere at present so I thought he might have been detained somewhere like jail, asylum or armed services.

John marries Caroline Chaffey in 1873 in Bethnal Green.

Any help is as always much appreciated.

Mirl

Hi Mirl,

Are you aware that your John Richardson was a witness in the Annie Chapman murder case of 1888?

That’s a very kind offer! I’ve been meaning to pay a visit to Peterborough for some time, but haven’t managed it yet.

I’m research a family named Pitts who lived in the Minster Previncts between 1840 and 1880. Several of their children were born and Christened there. One of my queries is where exactly they would they have been Christened? In the Cathedral itself or a chapel of some kind within the precincts. I don’t know how to go about finding out, which is why I reached out here. Help!

Thanks for the suggestion. I have been in touch with the Cathedral archives, but I wasn’t able to get an answer to my question. A personal visit was suggested, but with everything that has happened this year, I haven’t got round to it.

I posted my query on here because I thought others might have researched Peterborough Minster Precincts births and discovered where the Christenings  took place.

I have a record of a christening which took place in the Peterborough Minster Precincts in 1845. It is the only christening that year in the register.

Can anyone tell me if the christening would have taken place in the Cathedral itself?

The child’s family were resident in the Precincts at the time, I believe her father was a footman employee by one of the senior clerics connected to the Cathedral.

I know of only one photo of Alice Pitts, a post-mortem image taken in 1889. There are definite similarities between the woman in that photo and the girl, 20-something years younger, standing 2nd left in the photo above.

If anyone has any information about the group photo, I would be grateful to receive it.
