The Common Room / Re: Castleton Parish - Longelagbarsh

HI Kay - thank you. Looking at what you have presented, it makes sense and agree Longscleughside was in fact over the boarder in Cumberland, England. Interesting that William and siblings were all christened though in Castleton Parish in Scotland but it seems they lived across the border in England?!

Hi All
Has any one heard of "Longelagbarsh"
It is listed on the birth record as place of residence for my ancestor William Armstrong b 1779, as per CAstleton, Roxburghshire.

The newspaper article said of Parkhead but I think it should have said Pathhead. Other articles say he was of Dunnikier so putting 2 and 2 together, I have concluded Pathhead is correct. The birth records unfortunately do not show the village

Thank you all for your feedback. The link to Scotland Places was particularly useful and it seems  part of Pathhead was on Dunnikier Estate, hence hte interchangeability of where he was from between Dunnikier and Pathhead.

Monica - I looked at the christenings of all hte children. Unfortunately they all say Dysart so it is not much help in narrowing down. But Newspaper article in Australia narrow it to Dunnikier and Pathhead.

Thank you so much everyone.

The Common Room / Dunnikier - Parkland - Thomson
« on: Sunday 20 November 22 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
My ancestor, a John Thomson m. Janet SMith 10/2/1827. They emigrated to Australia in 1839 on the Moffatt from the Kirkcaldy-Dysart region where they were born and had 6 children.
At times they refer to themselves as of "Dunnikier" and at times of "Parkhead". I know Dunnikier was an Estate so I assume he may have lived in one of hte cottages.
Question: How are Dunnikier and Parkhead related? WAs Parkhead originally part of Dunnikier Estate?
Thanks for your help

Family History Beginners Board / Immigration AGe to Australia

Does anyone know the required age around 1860-1870 to immigrate into Australia if you were not accompanied by an adult?

AT what age could you travel alone or have to be to accompany a minor?

i have some discrepancies in my history. I wondering if
- she lowered her age to avoid being in the unmarried quarters
- in another case he lied about his DOB to increase their age so he could travel.

Thank you all.
So from Davcapps map it seems kniedsted was a parish/nearby village now suburb of salzgitter
I have pieced together a sketch of my ancestors but due to my lack of german, complicated by the fact that the translations just list stuff and I can't distinguish towns and villages from parishes from districts etc. Unfortunately I only had transcribed info, not originals.

Yes Manukarik - I think that is the one. and you have answered my question somewhat in that Kneisedt is a parish  - but see my comment below on SAlzgitter - is Salzgitter part of Dornton District?

I love the help - thank you so so much

1. Heinrich Devers  - born c1790 died c1851 - married Eleonore - maybe at SAlzgitter  - I can't really find any records on this couple, so my information is limited.

2. son Christian Devers born c1820 Salzgitter and died 1898 Rutherglen Aust- married Wilhelmina Fritzer in Germany - emigrated to Australia 1858 - I think they had 3 children in germany - christian b1851 or 1856, Henriette b1854 but died and Alvena b1858  - their births and marriage details are of interest

3. son Christian Devers - b1851 or 1856 - I think  Salzgitter (maybe Kneidstedt Village) and died 1924 Aust - emigrated to Australia on "Marpesia" in 1870 aged 16  - again birth and marriage - but what is particularly confusing me at present is that I can see a record of a Herman Christian as per Manukarik but how does that fit in with Salzgitter which he has on his Australia paperwork - also he is saying in Australia he is born in 1851 but the record is 1856
