Devon Lookup Requests / Re: SHAW Ancestor by occupation-Painter

I've just had another thought   :)

You could request a names search on the DFHS website.

The DFHS have transcribed many of the Devon Parish records and sell them in Booklet form. To save money and time they offer a service where you can specify a surname to search, they then email you a PFD file containing all Baptism/Marriage and Burial of the specified surname. It only costs a few pounds and I've found it invaluable.

I did a search on the name Shaw and it came up with:

55 Baptisms from 1813 - 1839
57 marriages from 1754 - 1812 and
34 marriages from 1813 - 1837

The Trade Directories tended to be area specific. So unless you were able to pin point in what area John lived you'd have to look in every parish in Devon.

I had a quick look on the 1851 census and found a John Shaw on there. Born Chudleigh, Devon in 1829. He was noted on the census as being a Plumber, but his brother William was a Painter. His Fathers name was also William b.1795 in Chudleigh, he was married but there was no womans name on the Census

This is a possible to maybe look into further.

Thanks for your reply and suggestion. I've already tried the DFHS name search. This proved very helpfull with marriages and baptisms after 1811 but James was born between 1806 and 1808 so hasn't been picked up on any of the transcribed entries.

There was a John Bulley on the list born in Dawlish, so I'm going to start checking that lead soon.

Devon / BULLYS of East Devon

Hello  :)

I've currently hit a rather large brick wall concerening the birth and parentage of my Ancestor JAMES BULLEY.

James states on Census records that he was born in KENN and EXMINSTER c.1808

Searches of both PR's for these Parishes have drawn a blank.

A search of A2A shows James apprenticed at age 8 in KENN, Devon. Bulley children also apprenticed in KENN who may be related to James in some way are:

MARY BULLEY born c.1807
JANE BULLEY born c.1808
WILLIAM BULLEY born c.1810

In 1833 James married SARAH WOOD in St Gregorys Church, DAWLISH. Their marriage entry states James as being OTP with a witness of the marriage being a JOHN BULLEY.

Has anyone any information regarding the BULLEYS of this area who may be able to shed some light as to where James was born.

Any help gratefully appreciated

Any information relating to these entries would be appreciated.

Thanks so much for that excellent information. My ancestors used to work in a Brass Foundry, do you know if the Sumpner building was in use back in the 1800's as a brass foundry?

I'll take a look on Multi map to get an idea of where Coleshill St used to be.

Hello fello family researchers.

I've recently started researching my family history and it's led me to Birmingham.....not being a Brummie or knowing the city at all I'm having difficulty locating some of the addresses on Census returns. ???

My family appear to have moved around Birmingham as in every census it's a different address mentioned.

I've located one to Ladywood - Ledsam St

The rest I can't find.

1841 - Coleshill St, Birmingham (reg dis) St Peters
1851 - 16 Potter St, Birmingham (reg dis) St Mary
1861 - Garlock Buildings back of 221 Ledsam St (Ladywood)
1871/1881 - Green St, Birmingham (Reg dis) All Saints
1891 - Heath St back of 215 (reg dis) All Saints

Could someone locate the areas the streets other than Ledsam are in.

Would be very grateful for help.

Karina
