Travelling People / Palm Readers
« on: Friday 08 May 20 14:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I hope you don't mind me posting here!

I'm a professional historian in the UK who has started to research the stories of those who worked as palm readers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I have found lots of mentions of various palmist relatives on this excellent forum, and thought it would be worth posting to ask if anyone has any palm readers in their family tree?

It would be great to hear about any characters I might have missed, and I would of course be delighted to share my eventual research with anyone that's interested. I have found lots of newspaper articles, interviews and court records that detail forgotten figures so far - I'm sure there's much more out there waiting to be found!

Thank you very much.

Best wishes,

Anna

Hi Seymour

I'm quite sure that Katharine ST HILL née RICHARDSON, wife of Ashton ST HILL was the palm reader.  One her books is for sale and it states the author's name as Katharine St Hill (Mrs Ashton St Hill), Book of The Hand: A Complete Grammar Of Palmistry For The Study Of Hands On A Scientific Basis.

See:  http://ukbookworld.com/book-for-sale/JTLANDPL/6532/

If she was divorced soon after her marriage in 1884, I was surprised she went through the rest of her life with the surname St. Hill, but she did.

I would hazard a guess that it was to do with money (they may not have divorced).  Presumably if she had married again, her first husband would not have needed to provide financial support for her.  When Ashton and Katharine separated, he agreed to give Katharine an annuity of £400 and the sum of £3,000 on his death (he died 1904). In his will he left her £3,000 in lieu of the annuity ... it all ended up in court in 1906 over whether she should get both the £3,000 amounts. The Court of Appeal ruled in Katharine's favour!

I know a reasonable amount about the New Zealand ST HILLS but for Katharine I only know what can be found on the UK censuses (which isn't much) and whatever PapersPast comes up with about her father Ralph.

Cheers
Koromo
:)

PS. I note that the officiating minister at Ashton and Katharine's wedding in 1884 was H. F. SEYMOUR, Rector of Nettlecombe.  One of yours?

Hi Koromo - would love to chat to you about this in particular! :)

Hi all,
I realise this is an old conversation, but I hope one of you may spot my message!
I am a historian in the UK who has just started a new project researching palm readers, and I'm very interested in Katherine St Hill - I'd be very keen to hear from anyone who may have information about her.
Thank you very much!
Best wishes,
Anna
