Shropshire / Timothy Clarkson - varying ages struggling to trace him
« on: Tuesday 05 September 23 21:40 BST (UK)  »
Timothy has been one ancestor I've come back to many times and can not get past him. So I'd thought I'd ask for some help/advice.

1807 - Timothy Clarkson married Mary Jones in Stapleton, they were both of that parish. Witnesses are Ann and Richard Blaney

1841 - Leebotwood, Timothy, Ag Lab, aged 55, born out of county
Mary, aged 50, born in county

1851- Leebotwood, Timothy, Ag Lab, aged 80? (mark through age), not known birthplace
Mary, aged 73, clungunford

1853 - Timothy dies Leebotwood aged 87.

1860 - Mary dies Condover aged 86 (newspaper confirmed widow of late Timothy Clarkson of Leebotwood)

So for Timothy I have the following possible birth years , 1786,1771,1766 with no known birth place. Is there anyway of tracing him back, or will he forever be my brick wall?

Thank you to anyone willing to have a look see for me :)

Shropshire / Re: What Happened to Harry Steele?

Hi, it’s quite possible. What year did they go to Canada?
I know from his enlistment that Harry was 6ft1, brown hair and blue eyes. Does your photos of him look to have dark hair and light eyes? And maybe massive hands too, it seems to be a trait of the Steele men.

I have thought the same. However I can't see anything that I can definitely say is him. His occupation when he enlisted is Farmer. And the only Harry I have seen leaving the country is an Engineer.

Also there is a newspaper article in July 1901 of when they went to London to receive their medals from the King. 'Trooper H.Steele' is listed.

His record states he was home for 8 days before discharge.

Hi All,

Harry Steele was born 1880, Eccleshall, Staffordshire to George Steele (1833) and Fanny Harris (1844)
Harry enlisted with the 5th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry 21st Feb 1900, and was discharged 18th June 1901. He was in South Africa, 14/4/00 - 10/6/01. (Address at time of enlistment, Aston Farm, Aston, Shropshire)
On the 1911 census Harry's father George lists 3 of his children has died. I have worked out that Harry is one of these three... But I can't find a death or any other record for him.
So at some point Harry died betweem 10th June 1901 and the 2nd April 1911.
I have checked freebmd for deaths of a Harry Steele within those years and these isn't one of the right age.
Can anyone help point me in the right direction to find him.

Thanks
Katie

Australia / Alexander and Hilda Steele NSW
« on: Sunday 22 November 20 18:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've been researching my family tree for many many years but have yet to really do any research outside of the UK. In aid of assisting my DNA matches I am trying to trace as far to present day as possible but I'm now coming across family that went to Australia and struggling to find much about them.

My g.grandfathers brother Alexander Thomas Steele bn.1876 Cotes, Staffordshire, England (sometimes Lipley farm, Shrophire) was in 1901 a drapers assistant in Birmingham, England and the next I find him... He has died in 1926 in his company's building in Wentworth Avenue, Sydney. There are several newspaper reports about it and they tell me he had separated from his wife Hilda and they had one child together. I have found again from the newspapers that Hilda died a year later.

My struggle is I can't find documents showing when he left to go there. I'd like to know when they married and who the child is.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction?

Many Thanks

Katie

A little bit late to reply... but I decided this evening to have a look through my old posts and check I hadn't missed anything. When I came across this post, I realised I might be able to see the wills mentioned via the national archive and I have thankfully been able to see Susanna and Ursulas.
Susanna's is the probate summary, so I will have to venure to Worcester at some point to see the whole will. But Ursulas is the actual will and gives me so much more insight into the family, She has left everything to her nieces and nephews. A few more names to add to the tree.

So Thank you very much ciderdrinker and Yegvard   :D

London and Middlesex / Re: Charles Harding... unlocatable before 1864

I've had a quick look on Freereg for Thomas bn c1821, now I know the 1841 census says born in county. But it also says that for Thomas who in the later census is born in Bucks. I have come across a Thomas bap 1818 in Whaddon, to a Thomas and Alice. Alice was buried the same day as John's baptism. and the two daughters died just a month apart from each other.

Thomas and Alice
children
Ann 1809
Mary 1811 d.1833
Elinor 1814 d.1833
Thomas 1818
John 1822

Is there anyway I can confirm this is Thomas' first family? I can't see a marriage for Thomas and Alice on Freereg, but will check elsewhere tomorrow evening.

Thank you all again :)
