Newington and Stoke Newington are different areas of London. Newington is south of the river and would have come under Surrey and Stoke Newington is a part of the borough of Hackney in North London and would have been in Middlesex.

The Common Room / Re: Multiple illegitimate children: how unusual?
« on: Saturday 27 March 21 09:44 GMT (UK)  »
My 3x great aunt Hannah Eden had 4 illegitimate children over a 10 year period between 1828 and 1838. I have traced the family through censuses etc and she never married. The vicar who filled in the baptism register helpfully noted the father of the first two. When I investigated him turns out he was already married.

thanks I was not aware of a will. I will try to find it and see if it gives any clues. The problem I have is that there are several Ann Clarkes baptised around 1774 in the area.

Thank you, I have all the info on the family after Ann and George married and I have George's parents. It is purely Ann's parents who elude me, partly because Clarke is a very common surname.

Norfolk / Really helpful hints on Rootsmagic !!
« on: Tuesday 26 May 20 19:53 BST (UK)  »
I don't usually look at the "webhints" on Rootsmagic but I have been searching for years for the parents of my 4x great grandmother Ann Clarke (born around 1774, died 1835 in Wilton and married George Gotts in 1795) so when the hint said it provided the name of her father I thought I would take a look. It said "father unknown Clarke". I would never have guessed that her father's surname might also be Clarke !!
