Armed Forces / Re: WW1 or WW2 uniform + some service questions
« on: Thursday 16 July 20 19:05 BST (UK)  »
Ahhhhh, might have solved this one myself.  i was about to say i know nothing of the 2nd soldier, he's not appeared in my family tree.

My relation: Charles Edward Bather, SWB, No:27745
Mother: Annie Bather
2nd soldier: Charles Richard Phillips, SWB, No: 3145

It's been a while since I've gone over this side off the family so now looking through the 1911 census, Phillips, 14, is a visitor with the Bathers down in South Wales while two of the older Bather brothers are boarders with a Phillips family back up in London, where they originally came form. Looks like they would have been neighbours. I can only assume both families where close.

Thanks for taking a look and confirming the uniforms. I think it might be worth sending away for his records to clarify a few things there.

In regards to the 2 names on the ww1 pension card, I've found another record for my family member, which states this other solders name under the heading "particulars of any man in respect of whom they said claimant has made a previous claim"

Would this indicate that mother made a claim for this other soldiers pension?
The son was kia in 1917 while this 2nd soldier, same regiment, died in 1920.

Cheers,
Nick.

Armed Forces / WW1 or WW2 uniform + some service questions
« on: Monday 13 July 20 20:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Could anyone identify this photo for me please? I've always thought it was my Grandfather and a friend but I've recently found that his father and uncle both served in the same regiment in the first world war. I'm lucky enough to still have the Brecknockshire cap badge, which looks the same as the one in the photo, would this have changed between ww1 and ww2?

My Great Grandfather and Uncle where both in the Brecons/Brecknock Battalion of the South Wales Borderers and ended up in India. Flicking through the medal/award rolls, there must have been around 10 pages of  SWB men who 'drowned at sea en route'. Any idea on what happened? If a ship was sunk etc?

Would I benefit from ordering my grandfather's service records? Would I get more info than what I've got here? I do have a service record of sorts, it's an old A4 sheet which has been typewritten and filled in by hand that states his name, address, service number, units served and lists his service medals.

According to this it shows Units:
Brecknockshire Bn (07/03/1939)- Hence question regarding the photo!
3rd Monmouthshire Rgt,
10th Bn (Jan 1940) – I'm unable to see a 10th bn for Monmouthshire or Brecknockshire in ww2?
5th Bn   (May 1941)
2nd Bn South Staffs Regt (1942)

One last question, on a ww1 pension card for a k.i.a family member, it shows him and his mother, but also another soldier's name? Any idea on why this would be the case?

Thanks!

Wow well that was some quick work! Thank you! I didn't think to check the next census along at the address. I've been stung by this on two sides of the family tree now, where the surname is entered entirely wrong...

Lots to look through, and it's certainly confused me somewhat!

The age/DoB's don't quite match up to the Richard found on the 1851/1871 (1833/39) census that started this thread, and apologies as it does seem to have sidetracked form the initial deciphering question!

John on the 51 census would be far too young to be this James' father surely?
Am I correct in saying that there's a Louisa Cooper and a Louisa Juffs from the same area?

Hello again!
I had the marriage certificate come through last week and Richard's father is....Richard Cooper.

One of the witnesses is a Louisa Cooper which I might assume is sister or mother maybe.

They married 25th Dec, It shows his place of residence as 35 Bramley Rd, Notting Hill, but I'm unable to find him there in the 1871 census (April?).

Having struggled to find one Richard Cooper, I now need to find two, I'm not sure if this makes it harder or easier ;D No joy yet, back to the drawing board!

Son William in the poor law system from July 1889, West London School District (registers on ancestry)
Another record here (and on ancestry in glorious colour)
Second bottom, two images
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QHV-L3NR-539T?i=681&cat=1134931

Wm Cooper, b 1884
Mother Mrs Sophia Cooper 24 Cathnor Road Shepherds Bush
Husband deserted 12 months

Register of deserted children, 1885-1899, not available yet.

Ah that's a good find, thanks for sharing that. That might explain where William was in 1891. He's back living at home by 1901, albeit they've moved. It looks like the street has since been demolished in the 60's but was only a few streets down from the previous census.

From speaking to one of Thomas' children, Thomas' wife met Matilda at some point it was also mentioned that someone did work at a farm at some point, I'm not sure if he meant Thomas or Richard and as it's something that was alluded to back on page 1, something i might need to dig into. Thomas & William never spoke about Richard, I suspect we now know why!

Thanks for the help given in this thread, yes i think obtaining a marriage certificate may be the only way forward!

Cheers,
Nick.

I wonder where the son William was in 1891 (William Charles Cooper, mmn Tanner, Jun qtr 1884 Fulham).

He’s with his mother Sophia Cooper in 1901 aged 17.  Wouldn’t it be nice if he was with Cooper relatives in 1891.

The youngest child of the family seems to be Thomas James Cooper, mmn Tanner, Dec qtr 1886 Fulham. He wasn’t baptised until September 1889.

Hi all,
Thanks for the welcome and thanks again for taking the time to look at this!

Thomas James is where my side of the family comes in, he's still with his mother and sisters in 1891. In 1901, he's living in Bampton, Oxfordshire with the Tanner family, his uncle William and Grandmother Ann Tanner.

1901, William Charles is still in Shepard's Bush, living with his mother Sofia and, Thomas Creed (misspelt as Deed), who's Matilda's first child (oldest sister), but as you say, no sign of him in 1891 as of yet.

Both brothers moved down to South Wales by 1911.

No sign of Richard, unfortunately I've no information as to if he's from Oxford or Staffordshire area other than going on what's been posted here.  I've been unable to pin him down in any other years to find a birth place.

Hi, i don't see a modify or edit button and i somehow forgot to mention that the ancestry site has it transcribed as: "Totsfreeg ?, Staffordshire, England ".

I've been unable to find him in any later census, the last child was born in 1887 and by the 1891 census the family has split up, although his wife, Sofia, is still shown as married.

I believe he married in 1871, I'm assuming after any census was taken, so I'm unable to pinpoint and confirm him in any earlier census.

I would guess at a 'T', theres a Tisdale family a few pages over and yes, the T does look similar.

I've attached a larger picture showing the whole family. I can supply the page number & district etc. if that will help and is allowed.

Thanks for taking a look!

Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone could take a guess at Richard Cooper's place of birth from the 1881 England Census?

I'm assuming the person taking the census had an off day as he's labeled the family as 'Cuper' and possibly just scribbled something they heard.....

If you require further info, please let me know.

Thanks,
Nick.
