The Common Room / Suicides in England
« on: Monday 24 March 08 12:39 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there is an index of suicides in England, particularly Greater London area?  I am trying to trace a relative who committed suicide somewhere between 1930 - 35.  Local papaers proved negative.  Dordie

Nannyjan, I have only just seen your message re: Powis Street.  The motto: All for each and each for all' was the theme words for The Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society.  It was their main headquarters and served Co-op Shops in the area, including Eltham where I worked for a time in 1941.  Even that store is now, alas, no more!  Dordie

The Freedoms of the City of London are now being indexed by the London Metropolitan Archives, though they will not be available to the public just yet.  They were originally held at the Guildhall, I am not sure if they have copies that can be accessed at present, but you could make enquiries.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: WW2 Bombing help

Hello Pettsy,  I have not loo9ked at this site for some time, but on reading about your search for bomb site, the London Metropolitan Archives hold the maps and also detailed info. regarding each bomb that fell on London area.  The downside is that you have to know the date on which the incident occurred.  It is a time-consuming job but i do not know of any other way you will find detailed information.  Dordie

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / For Lindylou2

Lindylou2  Sorry, I accidentally deleted your message, but you asked for Pankhurst parent's names.  Father of Charles William Pankhurst was also Charles William Pankhurst, mother Frances.  Charles (senior born c.1832  Frances born c.1834.)  Hope this helps.  Yesterday I visited Lambeth Archives to look up Baptist births/baptisms (family were Baptists) but they did not have them, neither does London Metropolitan Archives. Wendi,  Thank you for your interest in my search!  Yes, I do have details of the medal card and had the original medals until I sent them to a relative in south Africa.  I am based in South East London and have researched at Kew for any relevant details.  My father was a volunteer in Aug.1914 and sent to France in 1915.  He was repatriated c. September 1916 as I have a letter written by his C.O. to my mother when he was in Wimereux Field hospital. He himself said very little about his time in France, but I know he had a severe leg wound and a tree had fallen on him, trapping him in the mud.  It was two days later that the Red Cross (Bless them!) came round to collect the identity discs of the dead, that they found him alive and took him to the field hospital. I have a copy of the map from the area where he was fighting.  Thanks again, dordie

My father was sent back to ?England after being wounded at ypres, he was in hospital at Wimereaux September 1916. Presumably he was in hospital/convalescent care for a time.  Later, he was transferred to the Labour Corps and sent to work on a farm in Bedfordshire. Can anyone help, please?   Dordie
