Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Alderney Marriage - TURNER/SLEE
« on: Friday 03 November 23 21:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am looking for confirmation and potentially more information on a marriage between a Thomas Turner and Caroline Slee.

I've managed to find one of their children's birth records in Novia Scotia which very helpfully noted their parents' marriage date and place: July 22nd 1864, Alderney, England, L.J. (not sure what the initials are in reference to)

So essentially, I am hoping there is a record to confirm this and if said record holds any more information about them?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for reading.

Yes. Their brother and sister did marry before them and remained in Gloucester. I believe there lot is:

Harriett Browning 1854
George Browning 1856
Louisa Jane Browning 1858
Thomas Henry 1862
William Isaac 1864

London and Middlesex / 1861 Census - Browning Family
« on: Sunday 29 January 23 20:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I was wondering is anyone could help me find this family on the 1861 census. I've tried searching and keep coming up with nothing and thought I would ask here before moving on and concluding they are just not on it for this one.

George Browning, born 1827 in Painswick, Gloucestershire married Sophia Purton, born 1832 Gloucester, Gloucestershire on the 30th September 1855 in Gloucester. George is noted as living in Paddington, Middlesex at the time and Sophia is Victoria Street in Gloucester. George's occupation is also noted as a Railway Porter.

I have found them both in the 1851 census before marriage. Both of them living in Gloucestershire with their parents and siblings.

George 1851 census - Piece: 1962, Folio: 262, Page number: 10
Sophia 1851 census - Piece: 1962, Folio: 212, Page number: 46

They ended up having ten children:

William Browning: 1856 in Kensington
Sarah Elizabeth Browning: 1857 in Paddington, Middlesex
Sophia Browning: 1859-1860 in Kensington
Emily Browning: 1861 in Paddington, Middlesex
Caroline Browning: 1862 in Paddington, Middlesex
George Browning: 1865 in Paddington, Middlesex
Benjamin Browning: 1867-1870 in Gloucestershire
Alfred Browning: 1869 in Gloucestershire
John Browning: 1870 in Gloucestershire
Benjamin Browning: 1872-1876 in Gloucestershire

I have George, Sophia and their children on the 1871 census living in Gloucestershire and George's occupation: Porter (unemployed) - Piece: 2620, Folio: 66 Page number: 26
The oldest son William is living with an aunt and uncle in 1871 for an apprenticeship but is not living with them in 1861.

I've got George and Sophia on all the other possible censuses for them. George dies in 1879 and Sophia in 1919. It's just the 1861 that appears to be missing for them. Sophia Browning's baptism in 1860 puts them specifically on Albert Street in Middlesex. Emily and the rest were baptised later in Gloucestershire.

Let me know if you need any more info and thanks for reading.

It's difficult to read but I think it's only the last two lines that are relevant and say that Andrée Jay, Bastien Sallaud's wife, was buried "enterrée" on 22 November 1654.  Unfortunately the important word is the most difficult to read because very faint.  If I'm right that would imply that Bastien is still alive, otherwise it would say Andrée Jay is his widow.

Thanks for responding. I think your right since normally they only mention the date once per entry. But it possibly being one of thier deaths is really exciting. This image might be more helpful, it includes the two entires underneath instead which I think have that same faint word. The one at the bottom does look a little like "enterrée".

Wasn't sure whether to start a new post for this one. But it's a follow up on parent's names. This isn't the document I was trying to find earlier, just came across it.

I believe at the bottom is a reference to Andree Jay and Bastien Sallaud. The date - 28th November 1654.

The thing is I can't quite tell if it's a baptism or not. Maybe for a Marguerite and Andree ad Bastien godparents? This set of files is supposed to only be for baptisms from 1634-1669. The actual baptisms starting from 1634 are a couple more pages in with this being taken from page 1. I'm just not sure if it's a baptism or something else?

They have it in the form of tables - list of names. It is handily in alphabetical order and then in chronological order. But unfortunately I cannot see an entry for Sebastien Sallaud. I'll probably contact the tree owner from here.

It says they were married in 1634 in Saintes, Charente-Maritime - that may be on line.

Good god I'm blind. Thanks, yes Saintes do have records that go back that far - I shall take a look.
