Cliff, welcome to Rootschat, might your father not have joined the Cameron Highlanders at Cameron Barracks in Inverness, rather than the Cameronians? a Lowland regiment.
The batch of bewildered guys who were posted into the Camerons, pre their sailing for Italy, who came from the Midlands, Leicesters & Sherwood Foresters, soon settled down & were known by the Jocks as the Free British!  ;D

Skoosh.

Many thanks, Skoosh, for the correction: It was, of course, the Cameron Highlanders - equally bewildering to the brash 17-year-old Dad was at the time!

Cheers,
Cliff.

Hi. My father joined up in 1944 from West Hartlepool, Co. Durham. They posted him to the Cameronians at Inverness! He languished a few months before his older brother claimed him into the East Yorkshire Regt. So it was apparently quite a common occurrence to be posted outside one's county of residence.
