Thanks horselydown86 re: https://dsl.ac.uk/entry/snd/stop

(2) stopping, constricted breathing due to some affection of the chest, specif. bronchitis, asthma or croup.
This seems to fit with an 18 month child.

Peter, l am referring to the word under Consumption,  see the whole entry,  to the far right of the name James Latta 1 year 6 months.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with Cause of Death that looks like 'Stoping'
« on: Wednesday 29 September 21 00:48 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please tell me what the cause of death was in this death register? The only thing I can think of is choking, but it does not look like the other Capital Cs on the page.
Someone suggested the following. 'Stop(p)ing - I believe I have read some discussion on this elsewhere, for which I cannot now find the reference. It seemed to refer to small children either simply ceasing to breathe, which might equate to what we now know as SIDS 'sudden infant death syndrome', or general decline in infancy, sometimes recorded as 'failure to thrive'.
Thanks, Dianne

Thank you for the time you have taken to look into this Colin. Looks like I may stay down the rabbit hole a little longer. 😄
Kind regards, Dianne

Jane had 4 brothers.
•   The eldest brother Robert was the only one to stay in Scotland. He is in the 1901 Census as 58 - Ship Draughtsman - 8 Elen Street, Govan.

•   David shows in the 1881 Census as, 26 - Gent O. D. Officer H M. Customs - 59 Lambhill St Govan
However, in the 1891 Census he shows up with his sister Jane in England. 36 - General labourer - (Boarded with his sister Jane Waddell at 1 Cromwell ??  Chadwell St Mary, Essex)

•   The next youngest was James MacFarlane, who was my great grandfather. He emigrated to Australia (Well actually, jumped the ship here that he was the sailmaker on, and his wife and children followed)

•   William, the next youngest (who was the husband of Martha mentioned as being with Jane in the 1881 Census) also moved to the same area in England.
1n the 1881 Census when Martha was with Jane he was listed as, 22 - 59 Lambhill St Govan.
In 1891 he was, 32 -Boilermaker - 86 Argyle Rd West Ham Essex (Wife Martha 33, David 7, Anna 5, William 2, Violet 5months).
in 1901, 42 - Journeyman Boilermaker - 3 Sutton Court West Ham Essex  (Wife Martha 42, David 17, Anna 15, William 12, Violet 10, Robert 5)
In 1911, 52 - Boilermaker Shipping Co - 3 Sutton Court Rd Plaistow, Essex (Wife Martha 52, David 27, Anna 25, Violet 20, Robert 15

•   The youngest John, shows as, 18 - 59 Lambhill St Govan - Wood carver. Then also in the England 1881 Census, along with William's wife Martha 23, boarding with sister Jane at 6 Morant St Poplar, London)
In 1891 he shows on also shows on both the Scottish and English Census, 28 - 42 South Kinning Place Govan Glasgow, then Chadwell St Mary, Essex.
In 1901 he is in England, 38 - General labourer - Boarder at 35 Toronto??? Rd Chadwell St Mary, Essex.

•   Sadly, David and John both ended their lives in the workhouse.
In the 1911 Census David, 56 -Formerly dock labourer - Orsett Union Workhouse, Essex - Died 1911.
John, 48 - Formerly boiler makers labourer - Orsett Union Workhouse, Essex.

Thanks for all your replies. I can stop going down the rabbit hole of family research and get on with my life. I guess knowing my:
Father - James McFarlane Latta - b.1924
Grandfather - James McFarlane Latta - b.1893
Great Grandfather - James McFarlane Latta - b.1856
Great, Great Grandfather - David Latta - b.1820
and Great, Great, Great Grandfather - Robert Latta - b.1785
is enough.

Thanks Don,
that was all very helpful.
Re 'Scottish naming pattern is handy but if your James is the 2nd son or later son born then his father might not be James would it.'

I thought it was pretty general (but, I know, not always) that the first son was named after the father's father. As James and Katharine's first son was Robert, I thought the most likely male parentage for James would be called Robert Latta.

Hi again Colin, re your messages:

A quick mention in case it is of use….
On Scotlands People in the section for Wills and Testaments there is a document [Dumbarton] dated 1827 for a James Latta, Millwright in parish of Old Kilpatrick.

Possible death record for the above.
JAMES LATTER, no age 2/01/1827
Old or West Kilpatrick.

Do you mean these are the same Death documents, or two different James'?
Did all the death certificates have the name of the parents on them?
Even if I got  the death certificate I will not now if it is the correct one, unless it also lists the spouse. So confusing!!!
