Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: What is listed as the occupation?

Have you got the marriage certificate to see what his residence/occupation was at the time?

If those details match the 1851 census that would be further proof he is the right man.

I found the marriage index but not the certificate. Would have been nice to check it.

His father may also be called Michael but can't be sure.

To be fair, getting back to early 1800s isn't so bad. I don't like/trust older records because it gets harder to be sure what is correct.

No, he got married in 1851 and was then a bricklayer. He lived until 1889. Just good to see the 1851 is hopefully the same person. Just before he got married.

Thanks so much for the info folks. :)

That's the 1851 census. I'm trying to track an ancestor back. I have the census records for him from 1861 but not 1851 and 1841 yet. Well, hopefully that's the right 1851 record for him lol.

Hopefully, Michael Beaven isn't listed on the 1871 census?

EDIT: Well, he doesn't appear on the 1861 census so that's good.

Hi folks,

I need some help working out what some details say on a census record.

It's the Michael Beaven in question. I have this so far:

Shaftebury St, ...... house

Michael Beaven, unmarried, 29, ...... to the ...., Wiltshire, Salisbury

I'd be interested to know what it says about the head of the house and his wife too. I'm not quite getting what it says though. I think it says governor of a workhouse... maybe.

Thanks!

Thanks for the grave details.

Yes, the conviction and removal stuff I've seen but don't want to focus on.

Oh, maybe not them then. Thanks. I was looking at the same time.

Nice work everyone and thanks for the time you've spent looking! :)

It has become a bit clearer then. So, she was never married and simply had children with various men. Her surname/maiden name must be Aplin then.

I admit I'm regretting researching this part of my tree. Doesn't feel nice to know I'm related to them. At least it's quite far back.

There's a hint on Ancestry that Ann's parents are William Aplin and Susannah Bowditch. I suppose I should check that out.

Hi, according to this transcript he was born 1824 and baptised 1833.

Interesting that there are 2 possible baptism records then. That's probably the right one given the location, although odd that the other one should mention he's illegitimate.

Dorset Lookup Requests / Re: Henrietta Gibson's parents

SP has 2 Henrietta Gibson births - 1869 & 1870 but both can be found with their families in 1871

Thanks for checking. Doesn't look like she came from Scotland then.

So, I suppose the birth registered name has to be different in some way to what is recorded on the census records. That could be a needle in a haystack to find though.

Thanks for taking the time to look things up. :)

I also found that nothing relevant was coming up in the search for birth indexes. The link is at least certain between her and the Dorey family though. It was seeing them mentioned as witnesses on the marriage certificate that confirmed it.

Interesting that it has her as "Smith" in 1871. A common name was used because they didn't really know her surname? Makes me wonder if Gibson is even right.

That said, Gibson has Scottish origins. Could it be that the birth was actually registered in Scotland and the birth place can't be believed? :-\
