Wexford / st johns hospital county home
« on: Sunday 24 October 10 21:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

Does anyone know if there is any written historical book or research published on the workings, occupants, history etc of st john's hospital (previously known as the County Home and prior to that the enniscorthy union workshouse)?

My great grandmother gave birth to my grandmother in the County Home in 1923, but I would like to know if there is any publication available either online or in wexford/irish libraries to assist me in realising what the conditions, daily life was like.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Bill,

Sorry for the length of time to reply, but we have been researching ourselves and have just tonight got the 1911 census return for a family ancestor who lived at 11 Stracey street, bedminster...which we hadn't heard of before tonight.

So, out comes the 1902 ordnance survey map and we found Stracey street - a terraced street located to the south of coronation road and to the east of greenway bush lane.  Ainsley street was located to the east of Stracey street, but both have disappeared.  A block of flats off Phipps Street and the car park occupy the old Stracey Street.

The following link may prove useful

If it doesn't load, just type in Phipps street, bedminster and click on satellite.

Your 1925 map may be too modern.  Alan Godfrey produces excellent old maps - see link for an edition like ours for bedminster of old (1902).

hi wyanga

As csc advised, wigtown is part of dumfriesshire today and would have been classed as part of the old shire of wigtownshire in the 19th century.  For ease of reference it is likely records were simply placename, dumfries as dumfries was and remains the largest town in what is now dumfries and galloway.

I will have a look (Dixie) through the print outs of the valuation rolls and see if the butchers shop moved...

Best regards,

Hi waughboy,

If you read back on this thread you will see that the James Green and Catherine Galloway you refer to were / are my 6 x great grandparents.  My 5 x greatgrandfather was James Green, James and Catherine's first born in 1788 believed to have been within the Applegarth area.

Your Mary and my James were siblings.

Welcome to the family.
