The Common Room / Re: Relationship to me ?
« on: Yesterday at 14:00 »
If your mother and your God mother were first cousins (and shared the same grandparents), then you and your God mother would be first cousins once removed.

You and your God mother's son would be second cousins.

(I think;D

A slightly better chart here:

Glad you are well after the vaccination Diana.  ;)

I think your friend’s lockdown hair and face fuzz would be great to paint Roobarb. You could go to town on it, and give him lots of character. No one would know who he is, and you needn’t show him the finished work of art. I did wonder if NN would pose for you. You might find it therapeutic to paint her, then possibly a symbolic destroying of the canvas might be ‘cleansing’ for you ....  ;D

Ooo Roobarb, you should take advantage of your friend bringing you a new battery tomorrow to take a photo of him for your art project.  :) I’m sure it will be a relief to not have to worry about the car not starting.

You certainly sound like you were a dog magnet today. Labradoodles are such cute friendly creatures.

Maybe when NN comes snooping you could call out “Just washing my car” .... “just getting a tesco delivery” .... “just getting an Amazon delivery” .... “just dead heading my pansies” ... “just squashing some snails” .... “just rearranging some pots” .. etc etc. When you see her curtain twitching, look right at her and give her a wave.   ;D

Nothing of interest to report here, but much talk about “travel bubbles”. New Zealand is now “open”, so travel has started between the two countries without having to complete two weeks hotel quarantine. Singapore and some of the Pacific Islands are next on the list I think.

We are rolling out the AZ vaccination for the younger tier groups because they are changing the advice regarding age groups who receive the AZ vaccine due to possibility of blood clots - it’s now not recommended for under 40 or 50 (I can’t recall which), so they have stocks of AZ to get rid of.  ::)

We’ll have to wait to see how it all pans out.

The Lighter Side / Re: Nationality query

Cliff Richard was born in India but nobody would deny he is English. Perhaps we need some sort of algorithm to give weight to different aspects of our heritage. My parents were both born in the same town but my grandparents came from every which where.

Zaph

And Boris Johnson was born in USA! Can we send him back? ;D

Was chatting to a researcher on a FB genealogy group.  She said I was disgusting for calling myself Scottish because I had admitted to only 29 of my 32 3x grt grandparents were born in Scotland unlike her who had all 32 born in Scotland.  People get weird ideas, I don't know what other nationality I'd be.

She sounds like a lovely person.

Good to hear that you had no major side effects Pharma.  :)

Such a shame about the eggs MH. Wildlife is wonderful to see, but I really worry about them when there are so many predators. (Including humans of course).

I’m disgusted to hear about the rubbish in the woods where you walk Roobarb. I think sometimes once someone leaves litter behind others see it as an invitation to do so too. Similar with graffiti. I don’t know how you can encourage people to be responsible and less destructive.

Good to see you back Pharma, and fully vaccinated.  :) Did you have any side effects with the jabs? Which one did you have?

Yes, a cliffhanger in Line of Duty. I did have to pause for a recap a few times as I was getting quite muddled about the characters, especially the names from earlier series. For any "fans" who haven’t already seen them, these are fabulous:

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Has anyone had an Ancestry DNA test?
« on: Monday 19 April 21 01:17 BST (UK)  »
DNA is passed down randomly. Carmella’s links explain how the ethnic percentages are calculated and why they vary, or may not be as you expect.

Have you uploaded your raw data to other companies such as My Heritage and FTDNA to see what percentages they give you? As an example of differences, FTDNA says I am 2% Scandinavian - My Heritage says I am 29.4% Scandinavian.  ;) I haven’t tested with Ancestry.

Also, documentation is well and good, but fibs could have been told as to parentage which in some cases could skew percentages.  :)

The general advice is not to take the percentages as gospel.

It is interesting to see the numbers in the reference panels for various regions and how they are determined. For some areas there are quite low numbers. There are numerous articles about this. One example here:
