Ah thanks for that Wilcoxon that’s his son, I didn’t know he’d been killed at the colliery.  It was his son Albert who is mentioned in the article.  My Auntie Pauline’s (auntie because she was my nanna’s good friend and next door neighbour) grandfather was that  Edward and her dad Albert.  It’s her tree I’m doing, she’s 90 in December.

Thanks Gadget.  Some parish registers are great for information, others give the bare minimum.  I’ve noticed in our Pontblyddyn registers some ministers put NG in the margin which I thought meant no grave, a subtle way of saying they had a paupers burial.  Not that I know where the paupers were buried in our churchyard unfortunately.  The worse thing in the registers I think are the words ‘base born’, ‘bastard’ and ‘illegitimate’ labelling innocent babies.   :)
But I digress, I appreciate your help

Thanks wilcoxon.  I haven’t been able to find that family on 1861 census which has not helped.  Some people are using a death date of 1877 for Edward Phoenix but it’s not this one as that was the shoemaker who was widowed before 1871 census as he lived in lodgings then.

More on Elizabeth Jones - I think that the marriage record of May 1826 at Gresford is correct, it is the only Edward Phoenix (Fennix transcribed as Fennick  ::)) who married an Elizabeth Jones that sensibly fit the dates.  Witnesses were John Jones and Catherine Jones, the Elizabeth Jones of Hope who has parents Robert and Jane had two siblings named John born 1802 and Catherine born 1803.  Then again John and Catherine Jones could have been some random couple that the pair knew  ???
Elizabeth Phoenix who was buried in Hope in 1895 lived in Cefn Y Bedd but I still think 95 was wrong for her age, the civil record says she was 96 which is crackers.  She went from being 55 on the 1851 census to being 78 on the 1871 census, coincidentally her next door neighbour was the same age and then 88 on the 1881 census.  Her children were born between 1827 and 1842.
Gadget - I think Vicar's spelt phonetically, the Cymau was pronounced Cummi.  Only in Wales  ;D

Thanks Gadget.  I think Edward was baptised in Gresford although lived in Gwersyllt.  Three possible Edward Phoenixes, fathers are John, James and Edward.  No mothers named.  I will look for marriage records.  The minister at Hope Church was a star, when he registered the baptisms he named the parents and then put mother’s maiden name down and where she was from previously.  Fantastic for those looking back.

Thanks for that wilcoxon  :)
Another question, has anyone come across a complete howler on ages, say about 10 years difference?  The Elizabeth Phoenix nee Jones that I’m looking at was born in Hope, Flintshire (according to the census returns, although I think it was probably Cymau) and I’m thinking baptised in the Church there as her children later were.  Eighteen Elizabeth Jones’ were baptised in Hope between 1791 and 1801.  I found one with parents Robert and Jane which caught my eye as my Elizabeth eldest daughter is named Jane and her eldest son Robert.  This baptism was 1794 which fitted Elizabeth age better.  I then searched for children baptised in Hope with parents Robert and Jane, found another to same parents born in 1799, so thought first Elizabeth must have died although can’t find burial record.  They also had a son named Ithell which my Elizabeth did too.  I thought maybe too much to be a coincidence.  Sorry to rabbit on just wanted to see what others thought.  Thanks
