England / Stephen WALKER (c1771-1833)
« on: Sunday 06 January 13 17:23 GMT (UK)  »
This chap is one of my major brick walls!

The first mention of him that I have found is when he and his wife Elizabeth have a child baptised in St Nicholas, Deptford in 1805. In the same year he appears on the Taxation lists as a tenant in Stowage, Deptford. They have a total of 6 children baptised in Deptford: some in St Nicholas and some in St Paul.

There is a possible earlier child, John, who takes over the tenancy of the property in Stowage when Stephen dies in 1833.

So I am looking for his marriage, prior to 1805, to identify his wife's surname and for his birth/baptism around 1771 (calculated from his burial record).

I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Best wishes,

Gerry

Thanks, again. Doesn't look as if he married in Sussex, then.

Thanks for looking. How comprehensive is the Sussex Marriage Index for the mid/late 17th cent?

I am looking for the birth/baptism of Thomas NEWNHAM who seems to have been born some time before 1683. Also looking for his marriage to Ann (surname unknown) some time in or before 1699.

Thomas died in Birling, Kent in 1725 having fathered at least one child (William in 1699) with Ann and two further children (Thomas in 1704 and Rosamund in 1705) with Joane LUFFE, all baptised in Birling. However I have been unable to locate his birth/baptism nor his first marriage in Kent and have therefore moved the search to Sussex.

Any assistance would be very gratefully received.

Best wishes for 2013,

Gerry

Is there anyone who can advise, please, where I might find a record of this ancestor's service in the RHA?

I do know that he had enlisted by 1886 as his marriage certificate states his occupation as Gunner at the RHA Barracks in Aldershot. He was no longer serving in 1901 as he was by then a Labourer in Leamington Spa.

I have searched the Attestation records at Kew as well as the Ancestry and FindMyPast records without success.

Many thanks,

Gerry

Would someone who has access to the Hartlip parish registers be so kind as to do a lookup for me please? I am looking for the marriage before 1810 (probably between 1780 and 1810) of a male GRIFFITHS to a Margaret (unknown surname).

By way of explanation, Margaret's husband died and she re-married as Margaret GRIFFITHS, widow, to Benjamin NEWNHAM, at Hartlip in 1810.

Regards,

Gerry

Carol,

Many thanks. That is very helpful - both the link to the Medway records and the info about John Newnham. I agree that it is almost certainly the right person.

Spelling seems to be very chaotic - especially the less common names. I think if it sounds correct when pronounced then it is probably the right family. The surname was spelled Nunam in the 1851 Census but the address and forenames were right so it must have been the correct entry.

Best wishes,

Gerry

Hello Barbara and Carol,

I just did a search on the name Mezaler and Google came up with your message about John Newnham and Frances Mallery. These are my direct ancestors and I have been researching them recently.

They had 10 children as far as I can find out and the family appears in all the censuses from 1841 to 1881, living in Woolwich and Plumstead - I haven't checked the 1891 and 1901 censuses yet.

The information about John Newnham helps me fill in a gap. He seems to have been born in 1835 and the birth was registered in Charlton, Kent (now London, of course). I am fairly sure he was the first child. My ancestor was Reuben Newnham who I am pretty sure was the last, being born in 1855.

If you need information about the rest of the family, please let me know.

I would like to get information about John and Frances. Like you I know they were born about 1810 or 1811 - John in Rochester and Frances in Springfield, Colchester, Essex.

Hoping to hear from you.

Regards,

Gerry
