Australia / Re: I..think I know my OWN grandmothers name
« on: Sunday 01 July 07 09:19 BST (UK)  »
I can't resist Chrissy!  My Nan didn't even know her own name!!

My Nan is 98.. and always thought her name was Thelma May and her sister Jean Elizabeth.  It wasn't until Nan was 75 (!!) that she sent my Pop to get a copy of her birth certificate (for some reason) and they discovered that she was in fact Thelma Elizabeth and Aunty Jean, Jean May.  Even to this day, she refuses to acknowledge it as fact!!

Just last week she had a lady come and interview her from a government agency and she stated her name as the one she's always believed it to be throughout her life (and fair enough too).  At some stage early on, their names were verbally swapped around and that's the way it stayed.. through all of their children's birth documents and of course their marriages!

My Nan is still extremely lucid and a total wag!! BLESS!

Cheers, Jo

The Common Room / Re: Mahala - where does this name come from?
« on: Saturday 30 June 07 09:59 BST (UK)  »
We have quite a few Mahala's in our tree that have been repeated down through the generations as both christian and middle names.. and I intend to continue the tradition as I have always loved the name! I'm wondering if anyone out there (especially UK RCs) have a preferred way of pronouncing it? I have always said it as "Ma-hay-la" but have also heard that some say "Ma-har-la" and some simply "May-la".

FYI my first Mahala was Mahala Kent from Wivenhoe, Essex which fits in with the geography and timelines from previous entries on this thread.

Anyone got any ideas how it would've been pronounced back in Essex in 1833?

Cheers!

Australia Lookups completed / Re: What does DESCRIPTION mean on South Australia Marriages

Hi Jenn,

FYI .. I also have a SA marriage, a bit later than your request though - 1939 - that has that column titled as "Condition" with a footnote reading:

Under the heading "Condition" state whether Bachelor, Spinster, Widow, Widower or Divorced person.

Cheers, Jo

Thanks Genni, sure did.. interesting little read. Certainly adds to the painting of the picture of my family from the area. The Harveys were also quite the pioneers.

Well I had to read that a couple of times over to get it straight!! Thanks so much for all your help!

I'm sure they whacked in the Sherlock just to mess with our heads.. borrowed from an in law name indeed! Highest form of compliment I'm sure though.

This is my first real enquiry post and I'm just so impressed with everyone's help. What a fantastic site!

Cheers, Jo

Wow! Have wondered before where the STEELE's fit in as I had found Andrew William Steele SHEERLOCK before in the National Archives, mother - Mary, and I assume later his wife - Ellen, as next of kins.

Not sure about the last post with the STEELE/SHEERLOCK cross overs.. but another challenge!! Whyte Yarcowie Cemetery is 'around' the area of my original Mary Ann HARVEY (nee SHEERLOCK) in Yacka SA, so it stands to reason or possibility that they are all connected.. now to prove the links.

I went to Murray Bridge Cemetery on the w/end to see the SHEERLOCK graves there and it seems to fit that this William SHEERLOCK was my Mary Ann's brother, with his wife Mary (nee STEELE) beside him. Not much info was on the headstone, just the years:

SHEERLOCK
In Loving Memory of our parents
Mary 1856-1920 William 1845-1933
At rest

Will keep digging! Especially the HYDE possibility in Victoria. Thanks to everyone!
Kind Regards, Jo
