Tipperary / John Byrne and Elizabeth Maher
« on: Wednesday 11 July 07 18:21 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any information about John Byrne of Boleybeg who married Elizabeth Maher (probably around 1788) Children of John Byrne and Elizabeth Maher are Dudley Edward (b1799, d 1879), John, (b1801), Margaret (b 1804), Anne (b 1795), Elizabeth (b 1797), Edward (b 1789 d 1851), Daniel b? died 1837 murdered returning from Thurles) All children except Daniel have their baptisms recorded in Ballynakill parish in Laois but Dudley Edward Byrne definitely lived at Clonmore in Tipperary. I have no dates of birth, marriage or death for John or Elizabeth. John Byrne's father was possibly Charles Byrne of Byrnesgrove (b 1692, d 1751) who was the son of Sir Gregory Byrne by his second wife Alice Fleming.

Any news appreciated

I am trying to trace any information about John Byrne who was married to Elizabeth Maher and lived in the Parish of Ballinakill around 1790 to 1810.
They had a number of children:
Ann Byrne born 1795 christened in Ballinakill
Elizabeth Byrne born 1797 christened in Ballinakill
Dudley Edward Byrne born 1799 christened in Ballinakill
Edward Byrne born 1789
John Byrne born 1801 christened in Ballinakill
Margaret Byrne born 1803 christened in Ballinakill
Daniel Byrne murdered in 1837 returning from Thurles.

Ideally I want to know when John and Elizabeth were married, when they were born/died and who their parents were. Any help is much appreciated

Hi Valda,

Thanks for the info on the 1841 census. It gives a good reason why Matilda was in London and I guess there could have been any number of reasons as to how she may have met Dudley Byrne. He certainly did business in London with Thomas Warde, who was a very rich man from Stratford on Avon and one time Sheriff of Warwickshire.

Your info was much appreciated
Kind regards
Geoff

Hi,

I am looking for further information on Charles Byrne, son of Sir Gregory Byrne by his second wife Alica Fleming. Charles was born in 1692 and died in 1751. He was married to Margaret Colclough and had 4 sons, John, Dudley Colclough, Gregory (d 1742 Rosconnel) and James (d 1774) and 4 daughters, Margaret, Alice, Frances and Mary Ann. I believe his son Gregory married Margaret Bermingham and John married Elizabeth Maher but it could be wrong and I am looking for anything to prove it. A number of records state that all of Charles children died without issue but I believe this is wrong.
Any info most welcome

Hi Valda,

Thanks for your reply, I had traced a fair few of Matilda's brothers and sisters on Ancestry.co.uk but your list is even more complete. Are you a descendant of the Hillary's? Attached is a copy of the marriage certificate. It shows Matilda's father as Henry, though it looks like he actually died 3 or 4 years before the wedding. No occupation shown for Matilda but looks like she was living in Peckham (a relative possibly?). If you get any other info as to what she was doing in London, who she was working for that would be great. Maybe there is a common link with Thomas Warde as Dudley Byrne was his land agent in Ireland?

Geoff

I am looking for information on Matilda Hillary, christened 25/7/1824 at St Mary's in Southampton, the daughter of Henry Hillary (b:1801) and Sarah Hillary (b:1801). I believe Matilda married a Captain Dudley Edward Byrne at the Belgian chapel at St Georges Southwark on 26th June 1847, when she was 23 years old. They went to live at Sorrel Hill House in Tipperary Ireland. Can anyone confirm she did indeed marry Dudley Edward Byrne and if they have any idea how they met....a long shot I know!

I too want to get hold of the Parish records but I have some information. Sir Gregory Byrne of Timogue had a son called Charles Byrne via his 2nd marriage to Alice Fleming. Charles seems to have settled initially at Kilmacar where he married Margaret Bermingham and had a number of children including John of Boleybeg, Dudley Colclough Byrne, Gregory who died in 1742 and James who died in 1774 as well as daughters Margaret, Alice, Frances and Mary Ann.

Geoff
