The whole family on Findagrave.

Ian C

Don't believe the son Frank Benjamin belongs. According to the NZBDM deaths the NR in 1880 died aged 1 day.

Is this James with brother Benjamin?

Yes it is. Benjamin and his new wife left in Nov 1849 for South Africa, not long after James died.

Managed to sight the census image, which does look to be her going on the first part of the occupation - Surgeon's widow. Not sure about the second part - EIC Annuitant. As far as I am aware James BROOKING was not in India. One of his brothers was, and a sister.

The other thing that raises another question is she had a daughter Caroline with her aged 22, born London. If it is the right Susan then that is not James BROOKING's daughter.

Quite a few of the Devon BROOKINGs in this lot were Royal Navy officers, or went into the medical profession. Two of James' brothers were surgeons, one was a surgeon dentist and the other in the RN.

Possible that Susan was the widow of another BROOKING who was a surgeon in India.

Some more digging is required I think.

London and Middlesex / Susannah BROOKING 1809-??

Susannah PERRY was born 15 Feb 1809 at St George in the East.

On 5 April 1839 at St Pancras Church she married James BROOKING. James was born c1810 at Buckland in Devon.

They are in Stepney in 1841. James dies 11 Sep 1849 at the Queen's Prison, Borough Road, Southwark. Borough Road, Southward is the address given on his probate from 1862. He was a doctor and I believe he was the doctor at the prison rather than a prisoner.

In his probate everything was left to his sister Sarah Julia SNELL of Plymouth. No mention of his wife.

Trying to find what happened to Susannah. Can't find her in 1851, and no marriages after 1849 look suitable. Not sure if she is the Susan BROOKING buried at St Pancras in 1854 as she was in the Workhouse. The age of 44 would fit though.

Australia / Re: Benjamin BROOKING 1818-1853 Victoria

I did find in the papers that a ship of that name had arrived at Rio in Jan 1854, leaking badly and near foundering. Cargo was to come out and passengers were to transfer to the next ship leaving Rio. Of course it may not be the same ship as the Royal Navy had a ship with the same name I think.

If they carried on after that then are definitely lost at sea.

Found another article in the Daily News on 18 March 1854 which lists all the crew and 1st class passengers, including Mrs Brooking and son.

Thanks mckha489.

I had not looked on Familysearch and so I did after I posted and found both sons baptisms in Durban, South Africa, so they must have gone there first.

Eldest son was Benjamin Richard born 23 Feb 1851. Second son James Jefford born 17 Apr 1852.

Looked on Ancestry after finding elder son's name and found Benjamin and Charlotte left London in Nov 1849 and arrived in Durban March 1850.

So think it must have been Charlotte and Benjamin jnr leaving on the Madagascar in August 1853. Can't find anything for them in UK though.

Benjamin jnr is not the Benjamin R BROOKING who died in NZ in 1927, although he is distantly related. He was Benjamin Roope BROOKING.
