Crosby Ravensworth archives I turned up at the door towards the end last year we had been for a weekend over the lakes and popped into CR on our way home. A notice on the archive door has three or four numbers you can ring for group members a gentleman came and opened up for me to look round I think the group only meet once a week. It is worth a visit if you get the chance pretty impressive village archive. One word of warning it is hard to get in a mobile phone signal in CR I had to walk back up the hill to get reception.

Hi

Carole makes a good point about variations of surname on William Sokoll according to 1881 Census he was born at Manfield, not far from here in North Yorkshire is the village of Great Smeaton a few years back on a visit to the records office in Northallerton I was looking for Salkeld. In a span from 1786 to 1914 I recorded BMD`s from the Great Smeaton Parish Register these are all the surname variations I found from this one village Salkeld, Sawkeld, Sokell, Soakeld, Sokeld, Sokel, and Soakell.

For sure you have your work cut with the surname other similar sounding surnames in this area are Sawkill & Sawkell send me a PM if you would like the Great Smeaton & Manfield entries from my database you can have these no problem.

Cumberland / Re: Isaac Vipond

Hi

In my records I have Elizabeth Salkeld as being born 1781 but baptised 21 Jun 1883, Addingham Cumberland the daughter of Joseph Salkeld and Mary (nee Watson).

The Will of Ann Watson of Gamblesby, Cumberland dated 26 Feb 1823, the sister of Mary Watson.
In her Will Ann mentions her nephews John Salkeld, Johnathon Salkeld, Benjamin Salkeld and George Salkeld all siblings of Elizabeth Vipond (nee Salkeld).

also " I give and bequeath to my niece Elizabeth Vipond the wife of Issac Vipond one annuity or clear yearly sum of four pounds per annum for her own seperate use to be paid to her quarterly during her natural life without being subject to the debts or control of her said husband. I also give to my said niece Elizabeth the wife of said Issac Vipond for her seperate use my kitchen table, Long Lettle? Clock, white Feather Bed Mattress, Bedstead Hangings, two pair blankets, two feather bolsters, Cupboard, Little round table, tea board, and all my wearing apparel and four quills. Also I give and bequeath to Issac Vipond son of my niece Elizabeth Vipond the bed he now sleeps on as it stands"

It is a very long time since I looked at this Salkeld family I hope the will extract will be of interest is this not the Vipond family that ran a steam grist mill in Lancaster County, Ontario. Joseph Salkeld a relation of Elizabeth Vipond helped the family set the steam mill up. Joseph Salkeld must have been quite a good engineer in the 1851 Census for Shildon, County Durham he can be found apprenticed to John Hackworth a member of the famous Hackworth family perhaps.

Hope this helps your research

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Salkeld

Hi Everyone

This post has a bit of mix some people looking for info on Salkeld Square, Runcorn with others having an interest the Salkeld family who lived in Runcorn through the 1800`s this reply probably will be of more interest to the latter.

A book now out of print called "SALKELDS through Seven Centuries" written by J. Grange Moore published by Phillimore ISBN 0 85033 644 9 the result of J. Grange Moore researching his Salkeld family history.

This book in two chapters 14) The Salkelds into Cheshire and 15) Arthur Salkeld and family, covers in great detail the Runcorn Salkeld`s the chapters even have sketch drawings of Runcorn and properties the Salkeld families lived in.

These include :-

No 29) 12 Waterloo Road, Runcorn
No 30) 13 The Holloway, Runcorn
No 31) All Saints Church, Runcorn
No 32) Kinderton House, Runcorn

No mention of a Salkeld Square though

J. Grange Moore did not live to see his work published a real shame it is a very good source of information on the Salkeld family especially the early families of Cumberland and Westmorland also Runcorn of course.

It is still possible to get a copy of the book although the prices being currently asked are a bit steep  :'(

I hope this will be of interest
