Cheers Forester. I've made a note of these. Hopefully when I'm back on my feet after chemo I'll get a trip to Kew. One of thosde places I've promised to treat myself to. Thanks for tracking down the WO ref for me.

Thanks to both of you for a prompt response. Didn't expect feed back so quick. Went off for my lunch and there were the answers when I got back. I'll check suggested site ADY as well as 1914-18 site. It's great that I'm finally moving this on a little. Will be back later if I have questions.  Thanks again.

World War One / Royal Field Artillery 77 Brigade help needed.
« on: Thursday 14 July 11 10:31 BST (UK)  »
After years of searching I've finally, yesterday, established that my husbands grandfather, Fred Vause, 15 Navigation Road York, served in RFA, A Battery, 77 Brigade. Regiment number 71953 He signed up in York and went to France 25 September 1915, as per medal card on Ancestry and Absent Voters list for 1918 for York. That's all I can establish at present. I think his service record is one of the many missing ones.
Not too sure what medal etc he had as card shows
Victory  RFA/205B   210/2
15 Star  RFA/6A&B   5161

From family stories we seem to think he was court martialled for something and tied to a wheel as punishment? Does this sound plausible? Are there any records anywhere relating to the RFA 77 Brigade or disciplinary actions taken? did he get a service medal? Where can I go to try and get more information?
I assume Kew has some records which might help but I can't get there at the moment. Do the Battalions etc keep records?

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated?

Colette  :)

Hi. This is great news. Richard Craddock is one of those mysteries you find yourself thinking about over and over again. It's a puzzle I have thought over for a long time and got no where. So your e-mail is like Christmas arriving early. I do hope this helps solves the mystery. As you will see from the history of this topic I have considered the Harelstone link but couldn't get anything solid to back it up.

I Would be really interested to hear from you about RC's parents and family. If you want you can contact me on my e-mail address of (*).

Hi Everyone

Just thought I'd say hello and let you know I'm still at a stalemate on the Richard Craddock although I'm waiting for a nice person from Sulgrave to do a little research and see what turns up.

I have solved one puzzle though. A Richard Craddock was at the 3 Compases in Sulgrave but in 1854. He was Innkeeper and cattledealer. Looking back in my records he is actually Richard Craddock/Susanna Checkley's grandson. William Craddock, Richard and Susannah's youngest had a son Richard. So that's where that one came from. Still doesn't solve my puzzle as to what Richard and Susannah were doing between their marriage in 1790 and Richard's death in 1833 in Sulgrave. Only time will tell. I'll just keep hunting.

 ??? ;D

Sandy

Thanks so much for doing that. I never expected you to go off in the awful weather you are all having down there. So that could be that theory hit on the head :'(. Well he must have done something for a living in Sulgrave? If both the boys group up to have decent occupations, a master bootmaker and a butcher then I doubt Richard and Susanna were on the bread line. Also the headstone isn't a bad size in the graveyard so they must be listed somewhere doing something in Sulgrave. I've contacted the Sulgrave history Society to see if they have anything in their records and will let everyone know when I get a response. However I won't give up on the innkeepers theory just yet. Also Marilyn suggested that if he was the Richard Craddock on IGI from Harelstone he could have been a miller.

Thanks to all the shining stars on this  thread is so nice to find so many people willing to but themselves out to help.
