Donegal / Re: Figart Parish of Clondahorky?
« on: Saturday 09 August 14 17:53 BST (UK)  »

Andrew McNutt married Susan Richardson of Figart 5th December 1833.
He gave his address then as Figart.

Andrew McNutt was in Figart as per the Griffiths Valuation, about 1856.

In 1861 Andrew was a "publican" in Main Street, Dunfanaghy.

His son David's marriage record, January 1869, gives Andrew's occupation as 'farmer'

Andrew died in 1884 aged 88yrs.

 Hope this helps, Henry

Regarding Alexander Strain's residence as per his 1900 marriage to Bridget Diver.
'Drumtully' would be Duntally in Ummerafad, a neighbouring townland to Magherablad.

Regarding their daughter Julia's death place in 1902.
'Killyfad' would be Kilfad, a settlement in Grogagh townland near Creeslough.

Hi Mike. I don't remember seeing anything for an Isabella Ward, Knocknafaugher.
Isabella/Bella Ferry b. 1832/1833, married to Anton Ward b. abt. 1830 is on the 1901 and the 1911 Census for Knocknafaugher.
I don't know Bella's parents names but Anton's father was Brian/Barney Ward/McAward who was there in the Griffiths Valuation of about 1856.
How do you fit in to these Wards?
My father's sister was married to Barney Ward of this family.
 Cheers, Henry

There is also a townland Tievebane in Fahan Upper parish.

What were the names and dates for your ancestors?

 Hi PJ

Did John Denis and Paddy have sisters Peggy, Susan and Lettie?
 Who were their parents?

The Masiness Brennans could go back to a John who was there on the Tithes 1833

 Henry (in Creeslough)

 Hi Jacqui
The information for Fanny's birth registration was from a transcription of the register.
It's unlikely that there is more info on the original but it would be worth finding out.
Sometimes notes are added to an entry especially if there is a discrepancy such as no father's name!
As Margaret would have just been in her late teens then it is likely the birth would have been illigitimate and possible that she was just working or visiting Ballyness.
It was obviously important enough though to quote the exact townland and not the parish or nearest large town.

There were no Stewarts or McClaffertys shown in Ballyness on the Griffiths Valuations of about 1856.
The only one of either name in the 1901 Census is Betty Stewart, a widow aged 87yrs.
[ see: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000654466/
Household #15; Landholder #25 - Betty Stewart
Private Dwelling; Stone; Thatch; 2 Rooms; 2 Windows; 3rd Class; 1 Cow House
Betty STEWART, Head; Protestant Episcopalian; Cannot Read; Age 87yrs.; Farmer; Widow; Born - Co. Donegal; Speaks Irish & English]
None show in the 1911 Census.

I've noticed on another posting you give Margaret's mother as Elizabeth McCAULEY. I wonder is that the widow Betty above?
The Valuation books might show the preceding and subsequent ownership of Betty's holding.

Best of luck with your research.
 Henry

Donegal / Re: McGrody burial place
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 08:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi John.

The old Catholic church was built in Umlagh in 1807.
For hundreds of years before that mass was celebrated in the open.
The new St. John The Baptist church was begun in 1868 but not finished until 1886.

I’m not sure what , if any, burial records were kept at any time but you could try contacting the parish priest Fr. Charlie Byrne.
Phoning from Glasgow the number for the Parochial House is 00353 74 55154
Best of luck
Henry
