Cheshire / Re: Norton railway station

Hi
I just came across this thread, and thought I'd say hello. My family lived in Norton until we moved to Moore in 1971. We used to live in Primrose Cottages which were halfway between the Station and Yew Tree Farm. I remember Ste and Annie Dixon well. I also remember the beautiful primroses :)
My dad worked at Eanleywood Farm, and also for Teddy West. We used to wait for the school bus to Halton outside Yew Tree Farm. There was an old bubble car in the top field, and Henry the bull in the one opposite our house. My sister and I used to pick mushrooms in that field while my brother kept a lookout for Henry.
Ste had two dogs, Benny and Silvie. I have painful memories of them knocking me flying one day while they were chasing our dog down the field.
Other people I remember were the Bennett family and their daughter Frances who lived at the station, the Archers who lived at the Smithy, the Shackladys, the Rileys, and my great auntie Nellie (Wilkinson) who lived at a smallholding opposite Norton Lodge.
My dad's family were also from Main Street in Halton village, and we have family graves in the cemetery there.
I'm so pleased to find someone who remembers the 'old' Norton. I've hunted high and low for photos, but although there are loads available of Halton, Norton seems to have been forgotten :(

I've managed to find White Street. There was a road called Caithness Street which was off the bottom end of Ellesmere Street (part of which at least is still there). White Street was off Caithness Street running parallel to the Bridgewater Canal.
Hope this helps

Hi Pete

Spring Gardens was at the top of Mason Street. It was probably knocked down to make way for the Astmoor industrial estate. I'll keep looking for White Street.
The map I have is the Godrey Edition 'Old Ordnance Survey Maps 115:13' of Runcorn 1905.

Found it!  ;D

Norton Street is marked as being off Canal Street, which runs alongside the Bridgewater Canal. It looks like it was back to back with Pennington's Row (no longer standing), which in turn was opposite Mason Street (which I think is still there).

Twigg - I have found a burial record for Runcorn for a John Frank Twigg, son of William Twigg, who died aged 9 months (29/03/1914) at 6 Norton Street.

Hope this helps

Hi Pete
Please could you let me know your ancestor's name so I can track around the area in the census and see if I can work out where it was.
Sounds daft I know, but I have a 1905 map of Runcorn, and can't find Norton St on there either.
Thanks
Jackie

I was brought up in Norton village, which is very close to Runcorn. I don't know of a Norton St. There was a Norton Hill though, and a Norton Brow.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Silkstone help please
« on: Sunday 01 October 06 11:01 BST (UK)  »
One of my ancestors, Joseph Avis, moved to Throstle Hall Farm sometime in the late 1850's, early 1860's. The only information I can find about the farm is that it is where the victims of the 1838 mining disaster were initially taken.
What I can't work out is why Joseph would have moved from his occupation as a butcher in Hoddesdon (Herts) to being a farmer in Yorkshire, with no apparent links to the area.
I'm assuming he was a tenant farmer rather than the owner.
Does anyone know if any old records of the farm still exist, or where I could find out more information?
Thanks in anticipation  :)
Jackie
