Family History Beginners Board / Trouble finding a Will
« on: Tuesday 15 January 08 06:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

I am trying to find a Will for my ancestor, Robert Dent, who died in Norton, Durham on the 5 April 1857.  The Durham Probate Records can not find a Will in 1857, and the York Probate Sub-Registry office have searched from 1858 to 1861, and found nothing.  I am sure he must have left something, as he inherited properties from his father, and his son became a landowner too, several years after he died.  I live in Australia, so can't the indexes myself, but I was wondering if anyone knew how else I might be able to 'look' at the index for my ancestor?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards.

Sally.

Durham / Will - Ancestors land - Sedgefield & Grindon
« on: Friday 11 January 08 12:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi There

I haven't been on for quite a while, so hopefully I'm posting on the right board.

I've just got hold of my 5 x great grandfather's Will, which states, as I suspected, that he had 'freehold and copyhold messuages lands tenements and hereditaments situate in the several parishes of Sedgefield and Grindon'.  One of his houses with land he left to my 4 x great grandfather, however, it seems that the rest of the property he had was put in the trusteeship of two other men, as they all seemed to be leased to other people.

So, what I'd like to know, if anyone could tell me is, why didn't his children inherit all his land, and most importantly, how can I find out exactly what property they owned?

Anyway help would be much appreciated, as this is the first Will I've research in my family tree.

Thanks.

Sally.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Beckett Street (Leeds) Burials
« on: Monday 01 October 07 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi Kiwi

Yes, I did find my ancestors graves at the Beckett Street Cemetery.  I found the burial, grave and map details at the history centre in the Leeds City Library, when I was in England.  The staff there were really helpful, and I found all the information I needed within 10 minutes.  To start your search with the documents they have, you need to know the persons full name, and the year they died (preferably the quarter) too.

Unfortunately I don't know where you can get photos, however, if you can get to a Latter-Day Saints Church family history centre, you can order in the transcripts of the MIs of Beckett Street, for burials from 1845-1997.  I did also post a message on here, asking if anyone could check the MIs for me for Beckett Street.  The grave I was looking for was not on it because when I went to the grave, my ancestors headstone was almost buried.  I only found it as I was looking for it.  The graveyard was in a real mess with broken headstones everywhere.  We had to dig overgrowth off our ancestors graves.  Although there were 6 people buried in the two graves, there was only one headstone, so we think the other parts of the headstone where moved or broken.

Anyway, I hope this helps in your search.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Re: Baptisms Sculcoates, Hull

Hi There

Many thanks for your messages.  I've since found out that the L Moore I had is nothing to do with my Jane Elizabeth Moore.  There happens to be two people of this name, born the same time in the same place, to make things confusing!

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Jane Elizabeth Parker/Moore
« on: Tuesday 10 July 07 21:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi There

I was wondering if anyone was also researching the above person.  I'm desperately trying to connect the grave of this step ancestors, with information I have been provided on the death certificate.  The person who registered the death doesn't add up.

However, I was hoping that by sheer luck, someone might know more on this person.  What I do know is that she was born circa 1856 in Hull.  Married John Moore in 1897 in Hull.  John had two children, Oscar and Jessie by his first wife who died in 1896.  They moved to Huddersfield where John died in 1929.  She then return to Hull, supposedly moving in with a sister (one of which I know was called Clara Milner) and died approximately 1935.

If anyone knows more about this person, I'd love to hear from them.  They may be able to solve the mystery of the grave.

Many thanks.

Sally.

Hi There

I'm wondering if anyone has access to baptisms in any of the churches in Sculcoates, and is able to look up a baptism for an L Moore (male) in 1898.  I'm wanting to confirm if there is a person of this name whose parents are John Moore and Jane Elizabeth Parker.

Any help is really appreciated.

Many thanks.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / MIs for Hull (Sculcoates)
« on: Sunday 08 July 07 20:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi There

I'm wondering if anyone would be able to help me find the MI for my ancestor called Jane Elizabeth Moore who died in 1935 aged 78 years old.  She died in the subdistrict of West Sculcoates in Hull.  I've just found these details on the Yorkshire BMD website, so I don't have access to more details at the moment.  We're visiting another relatives grave in Hull on Friday, and hoping we can quickly find out where Jane is buried so we can visit her on Friday too.  I think waiting for a death certificate would take too long.

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Kind regards.

Sally.
