Lincolnshire / Re: Parents of John Elias Carter
« on: Saturday 10 July 21 01:35 BST (UK)  »
The main clues were a newspaper clipping and two pension record.

Sleaford Gazette 29th March 1919
SCREDINGTON
Soldier's Death - We regret to record the death of Ellis Carter, at Whittington Barracks, the son of Mrs Carter, of this village. The gallant lad had served his country three years, during which he was both wounded and gassed. We understand he was the forth son Mrs Carter has lost in the war, only one now surviving. He leaves a widow to mourn his loss.

Pension record 1 - Widow's Pension 7/WW/1441
Carter John Elias 2234, Lincoln Regiment, Pte
Widow Charlotte A, Rectory Road Tydd St Mary, Wisbech

Pension Record 2 - Dependant's Pension 7/DP/1020
Carter (1) John Elias 2234 Lincolns Pte
Carter (2) Ernest 34479 North'd Fus Pte
Name of dependant Mrs Elizabeth Carter, Scredington, Folkingham, Lincs

There lie the pieces of the jigsaw.

GRO Births Q1 1885 - Elliss Carter Sleaford 7a 487 (mis-transcribed on Ancestry as Ellise)

Hello, I think I can answer tis very old thread. John Elias Carter was not his birth name. He was registered as Ellis Carter, born in Scredington and his parents were Robert and Elizabeth Carter. We think they called him John after his elder brother who died in 1905 even though he was officially Ellis. He and three of his brothers all were killed in WW1 and are commemorated on the Scredington war memorial.

Robert Carter, b 1847 Scredington married Elizabeth Culpin Kirk, b 1857 Scredington.
Children:-
William Carter b 1878, possibly died 1968 in Lincoln (Un-researched)
John Carter b 1879, d 1905 9 months after finishing service with Lincs Regiment
James Carter b 1881, d 1914, serving with 1st Lincolns
Walter Carter b 1883, d 1898
Ellis Carter b 1885, d 1919 (this is John Elias Carter MM, 1st Lincs then 6th Lincs died Whittington barracks). married Charlotte Ann Clarke, son Desmond b 1916.
Ernest Carter b 1886, d 1917 serving with 1st Northumberland Fusiliers
Joseph Barnsdale Carter b 1889, d 1890
Samuel Carter b 1892, d 1917 serving with 2/5th Lincs
Mable Carter b 1895, d 1895
There is a 10th child mentioned on the 1911 census but as of yet not found in any records as of yet.

I hope this clears up the parents of John Elias Carter.

Open to any questions but realise that this is an old thread found when researching the 4 brothers on the Scredington War memorial for Samuel's Gt Grandson.

Kind Regards
Jamie

Hi Graeme

I have a Charles Hoyes bap Brauncewell 28 Mar 1819. This is the nearest I can get to 1821.
He is the son of John Hoyes and his first wife Ann Scott (Married 1816). Charles was one of 9 Children but his sister Ann was baptised 1829.
Not sure if this is the same or close relation to yours but Hoyes is not a common name.

All of my Hoyes Ancestors came from Brauncewell and prior to that Heckington so unfortunately I have not looked in the surrounding parishes.

www . jamieandsue . co . uk (just take out the spaces) and follow the link to Hoyes for my direct ancestral line.

Hi Bob

The entry gives him as of this parish and a blacksnith. I have looked on my tree for this marriage and do not have parents for Richard either.
I have Sarah Ellis as a spinster on the marriage entry again no parents.

Hi

We have looked at this marriage on a previous trip to Lincoln, the only extra details on the register were the witness names:  Thos Sandall and Wm Nicols.
What extra info were you hoping to find?

Hi All

Just for information....
Although you have eliminated one candidate, I can throw a litte more light on the Horbling Ann Wadsley. Whilst she appears in my tree on a far branch of the Mould family, I have no concrete facts about birthplace etc.

She was born Ann Bosting, married Richard Wadsley and also had a son John Watson Wadsley b in Horbling 1814.
John Watson Wadsley married Ann Mould b 1811 Helpringham and had a daughter Elizabeth Wadsley b Swaton 1837.
Elizabeth Married a George Mould b 1836 Donington, who later emigrated to Canada.

Maybe no relation but I thought that you may be interested just in case you came across the names.

Thanks David

You can see why so far this has been a bit of a brick wall. I think another trip to Huntingdon is on the cards.

Huntingdonshire Lookup Requests / Birth - Brington - Reuben Lawrence C1774
« on: Saturday 03 February 07 17:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Can anyone please help with a long standing brick wall.

My 4th Gt Grandfather was supposedly born about 1774 in Brington Hunts. A visit to the archives in Huntingdon did not come up with anything as there was a 10 year gap in the parish registers around this time. I do not know the reason for this gap but basically the entries end then we have half a blank page before they start up again many years later, as this was the book i was looking at rather than any electronic reproduction i was quite confused.

I have been told that in general BT's may have some information that is missing from parish registers but unfortunately I have not had the opportunity to follow this up.

Reuben married Elizabeth Smith in Molesworth on 20 Oct 1799 and died in 1810 in Brington. They had 4 children Sarah, John, Thomas and William baptised in Brington between 1800 and 1809.

Any help with this one greatly appreciated.
