Australia / Re: Western Australia Obit - BROWN

Dear All,

Just a note of thanks for all your help. I have today received a letter from my first cousin, once removed, the last surviving child of Thomas and Maggie Brown! Considering how long it took me to find some branches of my FitzSimons family I can't believed you've tracked down this branch in only a couple of weeks. Well done all of you!

Thanks to all for your information. I'd only intended to do an hour's family history last night but with all the new info you provided I was up till midnight. This morning I see that there is even more!

I have the a copy of the marriage entry from scotlandspeople and I'm convinced it is the correct couple.  Margaret Brown (nee Wishart)'s mothers maiden surname was Blaik so a child with that as a middle name is likely to be the right one. I'll follow that up tonight.  Thank goodness for middle names!

I only met auntie Maggie once in the early 1960's  but I got the impression they had done quite well for themselves in Australia so it would not surprise me if they returned to the UK several times to visit.

Best wishes,

Jack

Thanks Ros,

That sounds like just the thing I'm looking for. I'll give it a try.

Australia / Western Australia Obit - BROWN
« on: Sunday 18 December 11 19:06 GMT (UK)  »
I've just started looking at relatives who went to Australia so I must apologise for appearing a bit of  a newbie on Australian matters.  Using the resources listed on this site I think I've done quite well - I found the couple I was looking for, their dates of death and where their ashes were scattered. I'm a bit stuck in looking for the next generation - apparently they had 3 daughters so presumably they all married and changed their names. I'm hoping that obits may give the married names of the children (as they do in the US). What information do WA obits usually carry and which newspapers are the best ones to search? Do local libraries keep copies of newspapers?

I'm looking for:

Thomas Hunter BROWN d 24/12/1959 address at time of death 94 Douglas St, South Perth
Margaret Johnston BROWN (nee Wishart) d 15/11/1968 address 41 Beach Road, Marmion

Their ashes are scattered at Karrakatta cemetery - Crematorium Rose Gardens 14A 0284

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jack

Midlothian / Re: Edinburgh Poorhouse

Thanks Nell,

The burial I'm looking for is in 1893. I've already asked Mortonhall (without success obviously) so I presume that covers Comely Bank although Dean Cemetery, which is private and opened in 1845, is a possibility I haven't tried yet.

I've got some ancestors in the St Cuthbert's /Craigleith Poorhouse around about 1890-1910.  I understand that the records were destroyed some time ago but can anyone tell me where inmates would have been buried?

Presumably funerals would have been as cheap as possible and so would probably have been in common ground but would all inmates have been buried in the same place? If so where?

Wow that was quick!

Yes, I think you found two generations. The one I was looking for was the 1853 one but the other is her mother (according to the unresearched info I have).

What are the two dates for the the elder Agnes? Death and burial?

Thanks again,

Jack

Hi Jac2,

Thanks for your kind offer of lookups.
I'm looking for WISHART and DEAS in the Cults area. A trip to Cults Chuchyard last year didn't come up with much. Maybe your index has more.

The couple I'm trying to find are:
David WISHART (d 1861?) and
Agnes WISHART (M.S. DEAS) d 1853?

TIA

Jack

Midlothian / Re: St. Cuthbert's Poor House, Edinburgh - Records?
« on: Monday 31 December 07 18:01 GMT (UK)  »
Following up kooky's post from August, I'm trying to find where an ancestor might be buried. He died in the St Cuthbert's poorhouse in 1893. By then it was located in Crewe Road.

I've tried the Edinburgh City Archives and the council bereavement services (who hold many cemetery records) without success.

Any thoughts?

J
