Your best approach is to analyse the matches on Ancestry etc. which are not connected to known family. I was in a very similar situation with one of my grandfathers and, although I could see many matches that must have been related to him, they were mostly in the same position as me - either adopted or children of adoptees. Finally I looked very closely into surnames and abodes of my matches' ancestors and a picture finally emerged. Very luckily they were in a fairly isolated part of the UK with a limited range of names. By matching two separate cases I've now identified my great grandparents (my grandfather is one of their sons but I can't yet be sure which one) and thus can take the line further back. Best of luck.
