Just under Loch Naver (Farr parish, Sutherlandshire) on the east end there is a small cemetery (10 stones) .. stone # 4: John Douglas shepherd of Alteleard 11.5.1864 age:65 , Ellen Douglas 4.12.1864 age: 64. The cemetery is called Achness. I was sent this info on Facebook: County Sutherland, Family History 'Group'

Sunlaws .. thanks for that .. I did not know that Herd was scotish for shepperd. My Thomas Douglas married Oliver Young )Oliver died in Sutherland in 1855 and there is quite a long record on that death. Their oldest son William came to Canada in about 1839 ... and I am descended from that William (William married Hellen Paterson at Tongue Sutherland in 1824.
Hence my Moms maiden name was Douglas

On Scotlands people a birth entry reads .... Thomas Douglass.. Herd? in Shotton & Oliver Young his spouse had a son born and baptised 21 first James ... May 10 1805 Yetholm because of the old hand writing some of this is hard to read .. what I am thinking is 'herd' might mean (and I know he was a shepherd) that he lived in or near Yetholm but his sheep herd was in Shotton Northumberland ????
He moved (with his family) up to Sutherland in about 1819 and is buried up there.

When my ggg Grandmother died at Strathroy Ontario Canada in 1897 .. her obit in the Strathroy newspaper stated .... "Mrs Stephenson was born at Cottingham Yorkshire and was of a family of 16. Of  her brothers and sisters only 2 survive .. Edward Scott, Jeweller of Hull England and Richard at Cottingham the old home."
Mary Scott was born in 1819 to parents William Scott of South Cave and Mary Twidle of Ellerker

In the 1851 census Oliver (female) is found as a widow living with a son at Clibrig Sutherland ..... the next house hold is down as living at Grumbeg. I think this would be at the top east coast of Loch Naver. I live in Ontario Canada, so I am not close

I have asked this before .. but am still struggling with it. In a death 1855 for Oliver Douglas (Scotlands People) place of death given as Aultraleard ...... and in 1824 marriage record (William Douglas and Helen Paterson) at Tongue .. address given as Aultnaleard. Where is this place

Skoosh .... I rather think that caused a lot of resentment .. my own rellie William Douglas born Yetholm Roxbough 1798, came with his parents to Sutherland about 1819 and married at tongue in 1824 ... he left with his family (wife and children) for Canada in about 1839. It is my Mother who was born (in Ontario) a Douglas

There was likely no stone for Oliver. I guess I just wanted to know if there were still any Douglas's left in this area and if they are interested in family history .. I live in Ontario Canada
