I did actually contact Chailey Heritage some time ago asking if they held any of the war years records and they referred me to the Sussex Archives at Lewes but had no success. They had records for all years up to 1943 but the 1944/45 ones had gone missing. Nobody explained why!

I was thinking that maybe there was somebody still alive that would recall those years but I guess, as I am now 79- they are all long gone. Thanks for the book titles which are now ordered.

Trying to find information relating to Chailey with particular interest in Chailey Heritage Hospital during WW2. Does anyone have recollections of these years? Any personal recollections would be helpful. I was sent there in 1944 and have very few memories.

Thanks for replies so far. I have my tree traced from Joseph Mitchell 1823 right down to my late father. He married Charlotte Wales Waters who was born in Cranbrook, Kent in 1827.  1851 census he was an apprentice in Cranbrook. 1861 he was a linen draper in Strood and in 1871 was a clothier and living in Cambridge where his son George Joseph Waters Mitchell, then aged 18, was listed a stationers assistant.
I have not yet solved Joseph's parentage.
The piece of the jigsaw is out there somewhere!

Thanks for the great efforts to date. Certainly an improvement on the old photo we have. Colour is nice - except carrot top had vey much lighter auburn (it was such a wonderful shade!) The B & W photo has come up well.
Thank you all.

Thank you everybody for the efforts- great.  The bride and Groom are my grandparents. Best man is his brother George. The couple in front to the left are my great  grandparents and, we think - but are not too sure- that the old guy at the back with the bushy white beard is my great-great Grandfather. Grandad (the groom) had 4 sisters and 4 brothers. The two bridesmaids at the front are - again we think!- his sisters. The lad immediately behind the groom is one of his brothers and the lad right at the back to the right is another brother. Photograph taken 4th April 1904. This may answer one of the queries posted by Emmeline.
The family are still working it all out!
