Technical Help / Re: Disk Defragmenter
« on: Monday 20 September 10 20:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi guys!

Had a massive break and hopefully now back and thought I'd make this my first return post.

I never defragged my PC.

I've done a lot of PC repairs around the county recently and the biggest cause of slow Windows XP was compression enabled. Very few can remember enabling it but you can tell if it's enabled by doing this:

1. Open "My Computer"
2. Open your hard drive usually C: (might be called "Local Disk")
3. Open "WINDOWS" and scroll down looking at the filenames and folder names

If any of the names are blue then you've got compression enabled and no amount of defragging will fix this. I won't post how to fix this unless someone posts back saying they need to know.

If you really do want to defrag your machine (Windows 7 users don't need to as the operating system has a brilliant file management system in place) then only do it once every 6 months. The more often you defrag the more chance you've got of losing files.

Reason why is because the defragger moves files around the hard drive very quickly splitting them up and re-joining them again. This doesn't go wrong that often but when it does it can go terribly wrong.

Technical Help / Re: "Lost" Hard Drive Completed

All I can suggest is to make sure the IDE ribbon cable is plugged in properly. If it is, unplug it and plug it back in (from motherboard and from the drive itself) and see if that sorts the problem out.

Drives don't last forever and there's a possibility that the drive itself has died or (even worse) the IDE controller on the motherboard has died.

How old is the machine?

You can buy IDE drives now at silly prices (I bought 1TB for £50) so it might be worth trying a new drive (I get most of my components from ebuyer.com) and if that doesn't fix it, might mean something worse. Don't forget to try a replacement ribbon cable if possible. If it doesn't turn out to be the drive and you've bought a replacement one it can always be plugged into a new PC as a slave drive.

Did you know that on most website you can change the size of the text!!!

Just hold down the CTRL key and move the wheel on the mouse and the text will get bigger or smaller depending on which way you move the wheel.

500 is "Internal server error" - best contact BT and ask them what's wrong with their servers.

I've just agreed a new contract too ..  :-\
You should never have to agree to a new contract. This is their way of keeping you locked to them for another term which is mostly 12 or 18 months. What was their reason for asking you to sign up to a new contract?

AOL UK used to have an uncapped service now they ARE capped. Download too much and you'll have slow speeds during the day time. We get about 285Kb/s during the day and up to 500Kb/s during the night/early hours.

Here's some other information which may help...

Don't go with Virgin (aka Telewest Broadband, NTL, Eurobell) as they severely cap their customers. We were with Virgin with a 20MB line and got as fast as 50Kb/s during the day and only twice did we hit max line speed of 2100Kb/s during the night/early hours with about 300Kb/s at other times. We were with them for about 1 month until we terminated their contract for them.

I know a few people with Be There and they don't care what you download or how much at a far cheaper price than anything I've seen. This is who we'll be moving to when our AO(hel)L contract expires.

Nothing wrong with IE7 either.

Oh, really?
http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2005/12/internet_explor.html

The only time I use Internet Explorer is when I'm testing my web sites to make sure they display properly.

Original poster, I recommend you connect to the internet as normal and install a third-party browser like Firefox and use that instead of AOL.

As for the connection issues, that's probably down to Carphone Warehouse and their wonderful way of treating their customers.

You see, AOL UK suffered some financial difficulties and put themselves on the market. Carphone Warehouse bought them out just like they have with Talk Talk and some others. I was with one ISP just before Carphone Warehouse bought them out and after they changed we had problems like yours on web sites and thongs slowly got worse so we changed ISP. Guess who we're stuck with now...

Once your friend has logged in use the CTRL+ALT+DEL key combo to get access to the change password page where they can set a password and also change it.

As already mentioned - set it up as a limited account to keep your documents hidden.

Technical Help / Re: Windows Live Messenger
« on: Tuesday 04 March 08 15:45 GMT (UK)  »
Windows Live Messenger (aka Messenger, MSN) is a FREE way of chatting with others over the internet for free.

Chatting is done via typing and is on a one-to-one basis with only those you invite into your list of contacts. You can see when they're online and when they come online by the way of a little notification window popping up.

You can talk with many at the same time but they have to be invited into the conversation.

It's also got the ability to transfer files. Because of the way the files transfer (directly and not via email) there is no limit to the size of file you can send.
