Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: conflict between DNA painter and Gedmatch
« on: Tuesday 13 July 21 16:33 BST (UK)  »
My mother shares 1757 cm with her brother's grandchild and only 1598 cm with my son.
I likewise share 1065 with them which makes me her 1st cousin once removed, DNA painter maintains she is my 1st cousin.
I suppose this means that my mother and her brother inherited unusually similar segments of DNA from their parents.
DNA painter is a very useful tool but not infallible.

All down to the randomness of DNA distribution.
My s-i-l has a 2nd cousin who she shares 252cm with.
My son shares a mere 13cm as their 2C1R.
Son and s-i-l share 1974cm.

During lockdown I have been adding low cm links with common ancestors using thru lines, paying careful attention to validation before hand.
Then using the symbol against their ID to link them to themselves in the tree.

I really wish there was a way to link results to more than one tree though especially as I try to discover who my Gt Grandmothers mother was.
I have found it helpful to change the home person as a sort of workaround depending on who I’m researching.
 ;)

You could try to upload your DNA to Promethease

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: The perils of Ancestry trees
« on: Sunday 22 November 20 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
I keep my tree private so that any mistakes I make aren't perpetuated but am happy to share my tree with matches.
One tree that shares common ancestors had unfortunately picked the wrong lady, our common ancestors were from Cheltenham but he'd chosen a lady from Essex with the same name,
I have pointed out to them that they have the wrong lady (they reside in the USA) but the tree still has the wrong person.
Unfortunately it seems others have copied his tree and copied the wrong lady, and yes I'm 100% positive my tree is correct. :)

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Oldest person to test dna
« on: Thursday 12 November 20 12:48 GMT (UK)  »
My paternal grandma was the eldest of her siblings and died when i was 7 months old but my grand uncle, who tested, was the youngest and younger than my father.
So fortunate and grateful that he agreed to the test.

My paternal great uncle was born in 1921 and his test has been invaluable, as both my father and his parents had died before these tests were available.
Also my late mother, born in 1924, tested which means I can separate off paternal and maternal matches.
