Lanarkshire / Re: McDonalds of Crosslee and Glasgow.
« on: Thursday 05 April 12 00:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Sorry to intrude in this search, however I wonder if you may be able to help me with one of my brick walls. I saw you have an Archibald and wonder if the puzzle pieces fit.

My 4th great grandfather was Archibald McDonald born 1822/1823 in Crosslee. I have no parents for him and wonder if your Donald & Jean may be them.  I have a marriage for Archibald on 17 May 1846 in Glasgow to Elizabeth Paton daughter of John Paton and Margaret McEwan, she was born in Paisley. I do not have a death cert for Archibald but know his death from children marriage certs and census was after 1901. The couple stayed in Glasgow mainly but were in Edinburgh during 1851 census and various sections of Glasgow thereafter.

Archibald & Elizabeth had the following children:

Margaret b. 1848  d. 1901  married William Wallace (my 3rd great grandparents)
Jane b. 1849    married William Miller
Archibald b. 1851
John b. 1853
Daniel b. 1855
Elizabeth b. 1857
Alexander b. 1860
James b. 1862
Matthew b. 1864
Withen sp??? b. 1865 (from census was illegible)

Do you think there is a connection? If so I would like to share info.

Hi Kay,
my husband is a Grinstead whose family is from Sussex, mainly Billinghurst and Horsham areas. I do not have a John born 1805 in my database, however I am curious if he could be a cousin to my husbands direct line {Richard (1700's), Daniel (1752), William (1785), Charles (1819), Robert (1858), Frederick Reginald (1900), Robert (1929)}. Have you come across many Grinsteads?

Scotlands People only has 1 match for a James McDonald married to Agnes Anderson during the appropriate time frame. however the parents of this James are a James McDonald and Catherine McOliver NOT Archibald McDonald and Elizabeth Paton. or should I be looking for a marriage outside of Scotland?

There also are no marriages for Alexander McDonald to Margaret McLaughlin listed at Scotlands People. if they didnt marry in Scotland, where?

Hello Chedzoy,
you said there where 9 children of Archibald & Elizabeth, you only listed 8 however, who is the 9th?  I have a Matthew(1864) and a ?Withen? (1865) as well as those you listed.

I am curious about the 1898 death date for Archibald (1823) as he is listed as living by William Wallace (1847) on Margaret's death Cert in 1901.

Jane (1849) married William Miller (son of Peter Miller & Margaret Wright) on 17 June 1847, Kelvin st. Milton, Glasgow
They had: Amelia (1881); William (1886); James (1889)
William (ca 1844) died between 1891-1901
1891 Census lives she with parents, and brothers James and Matthew, with her children    listed as married but husband is not listed with household
1901 Census is widowed lives with children Amelia age 18, and son william age 15, and also lodger William Taylor.  It is possible James died during that time frame as well since he is not listed with the household and he was the youngest.

I have no info other than birth dates for the other children except Margaret (1848).

What are your sources for the families of Alexander (1860) and James (1862)? do you have more info on them? you have Alexander immigrating to the US, do you know where he settled? or what port he arrived at? or an approximate date?

I have these 8 children of William Wallace & Margaret MacDonald. I have had contact with 2 grandchildren of John MacDonald Wallace(1885); first- John MacDonald Wallace (1948) son of Joseph; and second-Alan Wallace (1948) son of John (1917). I have a lot of their info, though probably not all, and have expanded on my own with what they provided as well. where do you fit? I have 19 grandchildren of John MacDonald Wallace(1885) in my database.

info for Children of William Wallace (1848) & Margaret MacDonald (1848):

Margaret-Joan (1874) married William Finlay in 1897 Camlachie, Glasgow
they had one child : Archibald    no other info known
I have a death date of 1948 in Maryhill, Glasgow for Margaret-Joan

Jessie McKinlay (1872) married Hendry Ferguson in 1899 Calton, Glasgow
1901 a Jeanie Wallace lives with sister Elizabeth Kyle and brother in Law James in Camlanchie, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland age 29 uncertain if this could be Jane or Jessie

William (1878) no other info

Jane (1880)
1901 a Jeanie Wallace lives with sister Elizabeth Kyle and brother in Law James in   Camlanchie, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland age 29 uncertain if this could be Jane or Jessie, based upon age recorded probably Jessie
further information supports id as Jane as Jessie married in 1899

Archibald (1883) no other info

James (1890) no other info

John MacDonald (1885) married Ellen Lannary in 1908 Greenvale St. Glasgow
Children: Hannah (1909) married John Randall in 1940  2 children
William (1912) married Cecily Unknown   4 children
Margaret (1913) married Christopher MacNamara  1 child
John (1917) married Constance Pallett  4 children
Joseph (1918) married Josephine Campbell in 1947 Glasgow  5 children
Betty (1921) married Leslie Plowright in 1951   3 children

I have John MacDonald (1885) died abt. 1931 in Massachusetts and burial in Everett Cemetery, however Everett is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts not a cemetery; and the two main cemeteries there are Woodlawn, and Greenwood. I have not been able to confirm yet which, if either, he is buried in . I was given this info by John who got it from Hannah who was there at the time.

Elizabeth Paton Wallace (1870)  married James Kyle (1868) on 2 June 1892 at Chalmers Street Hall,  Calton, Glasgow
Their Children:  Margaret MacDonald Kyle (1895) married James Illion Harper
                                                            (my great grandparents) 8 Children

William (1893) married Christina Gardner   3 children
James (1899) married Margaret Alice Engelsen  3 children
Jane Wallace Kyle 1900-1901 Camlachie, Glasgow
Elizabeth Paton Wallace Kyle (1903) married Duncan Campbell Ferguson  1 child
John Wallace Kyle (1905) married Violet McCLeery   2 children
Robert Paterson Kyle (1910) married Ethelynde Small  3 children

I have more detail for dates and places, and subsequent generations, that is just too much to type here, email me at (*) and I'll send it all to you and would love to see what else you have that may fill in some of my gaps!

I have found new info that would with some luck confirm that William had a sister Mary.  I found a Mary Phare Garland buried in William's family plot.  In 1880 Census Mary & John Garland  live next to William & Ann Phare.  In 1870 Census Mary & John Garland and children William (b. 1858) and Anna (b. 1862) live next to Thomas & Mary Phare. Mary & John immigrated with the children between 1863-69.  Hoping this also indicates that Thomas is a brother also, or perhaps a cousin.

The birth date I have for Mary Phare is May 1814.

I also have a marriage license for Thomas Phare at the age of 68 which lists his parents as Richard Phare and Grace Vickel.  From marriage license of Henry T. Phare, son of Thomas, Thomas' first wife was Mary Short.

Is there any information available on the Children of Richard Phare & Grace Vickel that would perhaps prove whether or not William & Mary were theirs? or perhaps children of a sibling of Richard's.

Death information on William Phare and Mary Garland is not easily accessible to confirm parentage.

Kris,
Thanks for the census and info on Mary Jane Phare.  According to 1900 Census Ann had 12 children so that leaves 3 unaccounted for.

Ann's birth date from death cert (1914) was November 30, 1823 father was listed as George Hyne but perhaps was mistaken. 1900 Census also lists her birth as November 1823.

Also wondering about William's siblings as I have found a Thomas Phare, and a John Phare in Cleveland at the same time all born England. There is only 1 other Phare (another William) in Ohio in 1870 and not in same county, so it makes me wondering if all related.

1870 Census East Cleveland
Phare, Thomas age 47 Mason, born England
Phare, Mary age 45    born England
Phare, Thomas age 13 born Ohio
Phare, William age 9 born Ohio

1880 Census East Cleveland
Phare, Thomas age 53 Mason, born England
Phare, Mary age 53 born England
Phare, Henry age 23 born Ohio
Phare, W???? age 19 born Ohio

1900 Census East Cleveland
Phare, Henry T. age 43 born May 1857 Ohio, parents born England
Phare, Kate age 47 born November 1852 Ireland, parents born Ireland
Phare, Thomas age 77 widowed, born England November 1822, parents born England  immigrated in 1853, naturalized

1860 Census East Cleveland
Phare, John age 36 born England
Phare, Arabella age 39  born England
Phare, John age 10 born England

1870 Census East Cleveland
Phare, John age 46 born England
Phare, Arabell age 50 born England
Phare, John age 19 born England

1880 Census East Cleveland
Phare, John age 56 Carpenter born England
Phare, Arabella age 59 born England

Thanks,

Devon / William PHARE
« on: Friday 14 September 07 07:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
seeking to find out more about my Phare ancestors.  I have William Phare born April 14, 1818 in the village of Bratton Clovelly, by his own hand on naturalization records.  He married Ann Hyne in 1850 uncertain if marriage in Devon. They had several children born in Stoke Dameral, and a few born in Devenport in Devon.  They immigrated to Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio in US 1866/1867.

Wondering who William's parents were and if he had siblings.  Also wondering if I have found all of William & Ann's children. Uncertain in which place each child was born and if there were others I missed.

Children I have are: Ellen Eliza b. 1853; Martha Jane b. September 1865; Edith Mary b. February 1867; Elizabeth Ann b. 1851; Frederick R. b. September 1863; John James b. 1858; William Henry b. 1856; and Minnie O. (born in Ohio 1870).

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the advice.  I will try and find a death cert at the village clerks.  I did try to find an obituary in the paper but I couldn't find one in the one I searched.  perhaps I should try and find out if Heuvelton was still running their own independent paper at that time or if they had been annexed to Ogdensburg's.  If Heuvelton was already annexed into Ogdensburg's then there was no obituary.

Uncertain of what Susan's religion would be exactly, however to narrow it down, the only churches in Heuvelton are St. Raphel's Catholic, First Methodist, and First Presbyterian.
