Hi Queenie,

Yes, it is sad, and shines a light on how medicine has progressed!  There is a Sweffling family (can't remember the name), but they lost all their children bar 1 before the reached majority.  I suspect that was a gene thing?

Also, very interesting that Flinteft/Flintoft seem to come from north.  It did not strike me as a Suffolk name!

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Thomas Flintoft, Ipswich, died c.1746

This evening I'm trying to dig up information on a gent called Thomas Flintoft, who was dead by 1746, and I believe lived in Ipswich (may be St. Margaret's or St. Helens).

A lady called Grace Harland was administratrix of his estate.

Any help would be great!

Do either of you know where I might search for Barnaby Gilson at Lavenham.  I'd be really interested in starting to look into which mill Gilson might have been at.  There were about 4/5 mills in and around Lavenham.  It is my burden in life to research Suffolk's +500 mills.

Not enough years in me I fear.  :-X

Hi Queenie,

Great info.  Especially the Lavenham connection.

1805 reference comes from a Fire Insurance policy from the Royal Exchange (months & months going through hefty policy books several years back).  Barnby (sp) & William are described as millers & proprietors.

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Gilson/Gibson - Barking Tye, Suffolk
« on: Friday 05 April 24 22:51 BST (UK)  »
Evening all,

I'm looking for info of a miller at Barking Tye.  He went by the name of William Gilson or Gibson.  He was there in 1805, along with Barnaby Gilson (father/brother/son?).

Barnaby seems to have remained there till about he died in 1823, and Thomas (son?) took over, till between 1830 & 1841.

Any early (pre-1805) info would be great, but also ant infilling stuff would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Windy

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Thomas Quarry and Hubakkuk Layham
« on: Monday 09 October 23 22:42 BST (UK)  »
Evening everyone.

This is a cross-border raid.  The gents names above were involved in a business in Wortham, Suffolk in the early 1700s.  Hubakkuk Layham was a surgeon based at Diss, and Thomas Quarry was a yeoman who was based in South Lopham.  So they are both from Norfolk.

I'd be interested in any help establishing a connection between them an Wortham, other than it being very close to their homes  :D

Cheers,
Windy

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Re: William Fingay, Wortham, c.1719 - 1745?

Thanks Gobbitt,

Very interesting!  A hair merchant!  So he owned the mill and lived in Ipswich, so he must have employed a miller, or hired out the mill.

This helps greatly!

Having double checked the deed it looks equally as if the surname cound be Tingay, and there seems to have been some sort of connection to Lowestoft.
