Hi - hope this is the correct board, please advise if not.
I have a relative who was in the East India Company. I'd like to find a world map, preferably from the 1800's that I can show his voyages from the UK to the East and simply mark in the place names.
I'm not brilliant on new software and would like to draw in the voyage and mark key places visited: Teneriffe; Macau; Hong Kong; Chennai etc.
Would anyone know of such a thing. I've Googled and there seem to be one or two that might work, I guess I'm looking for recommendations.
Many thanks in advance.

The Common Room / Re: Familyrelatives.com WARNING! WARNING!
« on: Friday 10 July 20 03:34 BST (UK)  »
HI All,
Just a warning this crowd is still around and I'm ashamed to say I was caught. So embarrassing after 20 years of genealogy research.  :-[ :-[ :-[ Was trying to get through a longstanding brick wall, saw all the directories and didn't check! Lesson learned -  next time check in here and of course, if it sounds too good to be true - it will be.
Paid about $55 AUD by credit card and now sorted through my bank though I did get a new card just to be sure no repeat payments. Jane

Jamboree - Thank you!
Rootschatters are fabulous - did a search for 'East India Company' and found your post and reference to 'A Register of Ships, Employed in the Service of the Honorable the United East India Company, from the Year 1760 to 1819, with an Appendix: Containing a Variety of Particulars and Useful Information, Interesting to Those Concerned with East India Commerce by Hardy.'
I found a reference to an ancestor who served as a 4th mate and later a 2nd mate - have been searching for years and years! ;D ;D

Australia / Re: DIXON John & GILBERT Emma

Thanks Team,
 Jamjar - totally correct:
"I think this incorrect: Emily GILBERT's"
Confused my Emma with Emily ;D

Trying to avoid buying a transcript but suspect that it will be worth the investment. (Long story short, am working on the family belonging to my sister in law, so have already invested in several transcripts.)  You're right, if I get the 1859 birth transcript, should help.
Re the marriage, no actual marriage record I've been able to find, but the information was on the Death Certificate. So am comfortable with that.  A nice person uploaded it on a public site.
Cheers, appreciate your input.

Australia / DIXON John & GILBERT Emma

I'm looking for advice on where to go next.  John DIXON and Emily GILBERT's children were all registered in Liverpool, NSW. (James 1845; Thomas 1847; Frances 1854; George 1857; Emily Agnes 1859). Baptisms seem to have been at St Luke's Liverpool. Two other children deceased at the time of Emily's death in 1862.
Emily's death certificate records her as being born in Liverpool in 1828 and also the marriage in 1845 in Liverpool.  The Death place is Enfield (the family seems to have moved to the Enfield/Ashfield area).
John's name is recorded as 'Dickson' in relation to the marriage though as witness to the burial, he is recorded as 'Dixon'.  Emily's Death certificate does not record her parents. An unsourced Tree indicates that Emily may have been indigenous.
I have no information on John (name is common and many came as convicts; assisted and unassisted immigrants). The only unsourced information is that he may have been Irish.
John was deceased by 1875 when his daughter married. Have checked NSW BMD, various cemetery records, shipping records, convict indents etc for clues. Nothing stands out.
I'm looking to at least find out when and where John may have arrived in NSW.  Would really appreciate any suggestions of where to look. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for taking the time to put up the full records, Garstonite, much appreciated. Also pleased for a vote for the 1839 burial.

Lancashire / John LEA/LEIGH/LEE of Tyldesley - a Tailor
« on: Thursday 29 March 18 05:51 BST (UK)  »
I'm seeking assistance in establishing birth and apprenticeship records for John LEA (spellings vary).

The verifiable facts that I have state that he married in Cheadle, Cheshire, to Elizabeth Lawton in 1828.  From 1829 until 1839, their children were born in Tyldesley, baptised in Leigh and the baptism records indicate that John was a Tailor.

I am fairly confident that he died in Tyldesley in 1839, the burial record states that he was 44. John is not recorded on the 1841 Census and Elizabeth remarried in 1847.
If the 1839 death is the correct John Leigh, then birth year would be around 1795.

I’ve checked Ancestry, Family Search, Find my Past, Lancashire OPC, Cheshire Parish Register Data Base, Free Reg and just about anything else I can find.

The marriage record has his parish as Cheadle.

I am trying establish his birth details and his apprenticeship details. For apprentice records, I’ve checked Ancestry which seem to be the National Archives records. Still haven’t had the chance to check the apprenticeship records on FindMyPast at the library.
There is a possible baptism in Leigh in 1795 – to Thomas and Martha (the name Martha was given to their 3rd daughter).

My thinking is that he may well have been born in Leigh (given he started working there immediately after his marriage) and then served an apprenticeship in Cheshire where he met his wife. Comments/thoughts please?  I’m beginning to think I’m clutching at straws.

I have not yet been able to find an apprenticeship record online (I’m in Sydney) that could fit.  Perhaps someone could point me to a source I’ve not yet found.  If he served 7 years as an apprentice, that would put a record around 1803, given his marriage in 1828 and possible birth in 1795.
Or maybe after puzzling over this for years, I just accept that there is nowhere else to go.  I’ve put this on the Lancashire Board but happy to be re-directed.

Thanks for your thoughts in advance.

Thanks so much Maiden Stone, really appreciate the explanation. Makes it all a bit clearer though the temptation is there to jump to conclusions because of the variations in recording. Having the RootsChat community question me is a fabulous thing. I attended a course a few years ago and the woman running it, an experienced family historian, said you really must have two sources of information at least, if you want to be sure. Sometimes though the two sources are there but relate the wrong person! Too easy in this game to jump in and say 'that's the one'. Self discipline all the way to ensure accuracy and accepting that sometimes the answer is just not there.
The link to Ancestral website is great, I hadn't seen this one before.
My thanks to you.
Cheers
