Hello Simon,
Did you know that there is an Edgecombe one-name study by an Alan Taylor?  He has done a great deal of Edgecombe research into probably all branches of the family - from Cornwall, Devon,  Gloucestershire and elsewhere.  An Edgecombe magazine is published and distributed to 'members' each Quarter and the various branches of the family are kept up to date with new findings. I can give details if you are interested.

Geraldine

Please, that'd be great.

I haven't used the site, but was tempted to sign up for free trial to see how it works. Wondered though if it was like the Ancestry 'free trial', where you give them credit card details in advance and then find it difficult to cancel when your free trial is ended. :-[

I was also concerned on looking at it that it seems to add ancestors to your tree - what opportunities do you have to verify the data? How reliable are the other users? How accurate is the 'handprint' data matching facility? Would love to hear from anyone who has experience - though it seems from the previous postings that if you're not American, getting any matches at all seems more of a problem than spurious matches.

It will find potential matches to the data you entered, and if a strong match to anothers data, will hint.  It's down to you whether to accept this info.

I've found it very England orientated - which it should be, as many US families started here.  I've managed to link from a member that emigrated to Michigan, and found out who they married (spouse from England, yet did not marry until in the US) and their kids upto present.

Hello Simon,
I have several of  those names and my families are from St Erth and Phillack etc.,
My Nicholas line is from Ludgvan.
Would very much like to compare notes.
Kathy

Do any of your nicholas's have links to Morley or Badge?

All the names I listed originate from the same area's as yours.

I have some Gedcom files of some of these families if that helps.

Armed Forces / Military service - can this help me?
« on: Saturday 18 September 04 20:51 BST (UK)  »
I have found links to military service for my great grandafather, Herbert (Albert) Hawking, in our family bible - this is the only info for him really.  It confirms his DOB and place as Linkinhorne.  The service relates to the 64th Royal Artillery battery as a driver, and shows him having served in the Bora war - service between 1896 and 1905.  I also have his service number.

I seem unable at present to locate any records of him online.

Would this help me find information for his father and mother, or simply usefull info to have?

The Eldred in 1891 could be mine.

From 1841, Emily (nee richards), Samuel and one of the William's seem to fit.

I'll agree prices are a little inflated, but really my father is paying (he doesn't have a computer, so I'm doing it for him).

Atleast I know If I ever quit the service, the data would remain there for me to pick up again if I changed my mind.

Technical Help / Onegreatfamily.com - anyone else using it?
« on: Thursday 16 September 04 17:02 BST (UK)  »
I've been using www.onegreatfamily.com for my family tree.  It seems to be good, as I have been able to link to someone elses tree thanks to a marriage, and all the names, places and dates tying up.  It also allows GEDCOM files to be uploaded, which I did after the software I had became unable to deal with the data I was feeding it.  >:(   So far very impressed with this service!

Just wondered if anyone else was using this service?

Do you have an Ann Mann b1722 marrying a William MURLEY in 1754?

If so, you may have a link to my family.

I have an Elizabeth, but born 1841 Phillack, Cornwall.  Daughter of Samuel ROSCROW and Emily RICHARDS.  Samuel's father was William ROSCROW and Ann (?)

I may have a link to Thomas and Elizabeth Couche.  They were Williams parents, as far as I can tell.  William was born somewhere between 1780 and 1790, which would mean (if they are related to Thomas and Elizabeth) we have some sort of match.  This line of the family keeps expanding, so I may find a sibling of someone I've found already may possibly link to you.

Do you have details on Peter and James (children etc)?  Do you have more details on your Elizabeth's siblings, or details of other Roscrows from 1816 onwards?
